High fashion touch is carried out by the rich materials used for upholstery textured silks in vivid shades, gay Gauguin, prints, and blended fabrics combining c o 1 1 o n with synthetic yarns in interesting new- weaves. Many of the season's new de signs, now in the stores, take their cues from traditional and classic themes. Such nostalgia has inspired adaptations of classic Mediterranean lines, and of the American heritage in the best of Colonial styling. Designs Showing International Mood "Good design is good lorever," Mrs. Dcde Draper, president of the National Society of Interior De signers, told me firmly when I asked her what she thought of the emphasis on traditional de signs. She made this point: If a young homemaker is undecided in her tastes, she might be wise to stick to the designs created by the master English cabinetmakers, Two approaches to traditional styling are evident. One is the line-for-line reproduction of the finest antiques. This will probably be most appreciated by the home maker who is already devoted to English traditional, and who has a comparatively generous budget The second approach is the adaption of designs and motifs of the old masters, and the mixing of more than one element in a single piece. This may he of particular interest lo the homemaker who likes traditional with a dash of 20th century. In the main, adaptations are available in medium price ranges. A good example: The extensive collection designed bv Morton Gershun and Charles Haight. In this medium-priced collection, ma hogany, the traditionalist wood, is fused in a soft nutty brown tinish. Panels in sideboards or chests may display the intricate grain ing of mahogany crotch or burl. The graceful hunt table of semi circular shape, has been modern ized, lowered to coffee table height, and placed on casters. Two drop leaves swing up for added serving space. An old. traditional library ta ble has also been proportioned to end table height and width. Touches of color avocado green liven chest interiors and mark the book storage well of another end table. Chairs and sofas arc scaled for the modern home. More variety to choose from and more value for the money appear to be the twin themes of the spring fi3 selection of furni ture and furnishings. Designs show a distinct interna tional flavor. Traditional influ ences inspire styles executed in modern materials and contempor ary colors. Strongly represented are American Colonial and Fed eral; formal European 17th, 18th and early lfllh cenlurv; Italian. Hands Often Show Neglect By ALICIA HART Newspaper Enterprise Assn. Every day is full of surprises. As one of my friends was chat ting, she gestured with her hands I watched, fascinated, and then the reason for my piqued inter est dawned . . . "She has red hands." Now, this may sound ridiculous in this day of hand creams, sooth ing lotions, and less-harsh deter gents. I was sure the red-hand era was past. Apparently, it is not. Winter, especially, is a difficult season for you hotnemakers who are in and out of the house, on the w ay lo the grocery, taking the youngsters to school or whisking off lo a neighborhood kaffec klatch. In between, you are wash ing dishes, doing the laundry and quite possibly bathing a baby. Taking care of our hands is like brushing after every meal we sometimes forgel, or feel we don't have the time. As a double protection before you go outdoors, use a special wind-and-wcather lodon and slip on your gloves. If you are off (or winter weekend, add a lotion in an unbreakable plastic tube to your "must" supplies. Or, if you are merely joining the family ice skating on a nearby pond, slip a tube of lotion into your pocket. classic and provincial; and soft ened, enriched contemporary and transitional. PERSONAL INTERESTS ARE MOVING IN Spanish, Greek and Mediterra nean themes m general provide new decorative ti'ealmems, newi ideas in room accessories. Perhaps the newest trend in the treatment of home space is away trom the catch-all family room toward personal-interest rooms- dens, music rooms, libraries, for instance. Both decorators and fur niture manufacturers have come up with inspirations to make this trend possible. Since space is at a premium in most homes, more "single pur pose" rooms mean that something has lo give, elsewhere, and fresh ideas are offered for more dou blc-duty rooms. Some suggested combinations, (or which the fur nishings arc spring-available, are living-dining, bed-sitting, work play. TREND IS SOI-T l'Oll SEATING Walnut and fruifwnods are widfc ly used in spring's furniture of ferings, as are mahogany and maple. Newest tone for wood fin ishes is medium brown, cither a little darker or a little lighter than usual. Expensive - looking hardware, w ith a hand-crafted air, carries out the value theme. Brilliant colorings share interest with the softer tones in uphol stery for chairs and sofas. Con trasts, effective and decorative are created by the use of splashy florals side by side with muted stripes and solids. Seating emphasizes cushiony comfort and graceful contours. Soft feeling literally is extended to a softer look in design, wilh curv ing lines, airy-effect carving on the exposed woods, tufting and quilting of fabrics.
