Here, Barbara Carpenter shows a part of the jewelry dis play designed to please the most discerning woman, Leather rides Ihe crest of fashion this spring. I.icht as nn April breeze, but warm enough (or blustery spring days, leather apparel is made to travel right up to the hot months. The softer, more feminine look is interpreted In graceful leather coats, in daytime and after-dark dresses, In hats and suits. Soft pastels and taupes are favored colors. Both smooth, matte leather and buttersoft suede share the fashion spotlight, reports Leather Indus tries of America. Leather shows up in sleeveless. pluncinc-back suede sheaths for evening and in elbow-patched, leather-fronted knitted cardigans for casual wear. For the bright look of spring, delicate - colored leathers team with silks, with cottons and with sheerest wools. A raw silk sheath takes on added dimension with a silk-bound matching suede jacket. The costume look is carried out in a Chanel-type cabretta jacket and matching, gently flared skirt. Fall's darling, the leather shift. shifts into spring but in more hody-clinRing lines, in light tones such as rose beige, and pale blue. Handsome for town wear is the short coat in suede or supple smooth leather, in minly green or licorice black. Simply styled, the season's coals accentuate leather texture, ror af ter-dark wear, elegant wrap coats of smooth cabretta arc cmbroi dered or studded with fake jew els. Lightly flared smooth leather skirts double for day and eve ning wear. Daytime sees them in middy or ovcrblousc style in doe soft leather, nighttime with a beaded chiffon top. For more after-dark glamour, the reed-slim A line gown appears in taupe smooth leather or sand beifie suede leather. The leather hat is spring-im portant in pillboxes and domes, in turbans and sailors. It shows up in smooth and grained leath ers, .in artfully draped and wrapped turbans in shiny kidskin or soft suede. It flashes in black patent leather, in straw combina tions, in pale lilac tones and navy blues. Black patent now becomes morel than a classic shoe material; it is fashionable in apparel as well as hats. As a coat, it takes' to abbreviated trench styles. For the beach, it's lined in white terry cloth. Costume Suit Leads Parade PARIS (UPH - That conven tional spring suit and separate blouse was quietly buried today at the opening show of the Paris spring women's fashion collec tions. Jean Desses instead concentrat ed on a style that is becoming more and more popular in Paris: A suit with a bright blouse ex actly matching the lining of the jacket. This means the owner has a one- blouse suit that can't be varied with other accessories. But it gives the "costume" effect that in the Desses collection, and re portedly others in Paris this spring, banishes that conventional spring suit of yesteryear. One black and w hite tweed suit. for example, had a Kelly green blouse and jacket lining. A pink shantung suit had a pink-and-cof-fee wildly printed blouse and matching jacket lining. Desses showed only a few con ventional suit jackets that but toned up the front and had small lapels and narrow collars. Some suit jackets casually but toned right on to the blouse and did without lapels and collars. The only obviously new point n tlie Desses collection was his shoulders, slightly widened on many outfits. The ladies of the press and international buyers looked for evidence of a return to the Joan Crawford shoulders of the 1930s. But so far, at least, Desses only barely emphasized tlie shoulder, not through padding but through cut and design. One example was a black-and-white print silk dress with a tuck on the shoulder that gave a slight jutting wing effect. The silhouette for women's clothes for spring reportedly will be based on a rectangle, instead of the triangle shape that was more or less the tune called by the powerful fashion designers for last autumn. Forty four designers are pre senting collections over the next 10 days, plus the great Gabrielle Chanel, 79. the oldest designer in Paris, and Yves St. Laurent, 26, the youngest, neither of whom are members. FOR FEMININITY Soft shirring, gentle blousing and fluid bias cuts contribute to the shapely, feminine look of! spring s new dresses. Beauty Briefs Skin tone plays an important ole in enhancing your jewelry. Most of us buy earrings or neck laces because of eye appeal. How ever, we should consider whether the gold or silver settings and the jewel tones selected harmonize with our make-up shades used as well as our natural skin tones. Gold, for instance, goes hand in hand with a creamy tone com plexion. Silver is more flattering to you if you have a good deal of pink coloring.
