Mrs. Dcde Draper, president of
the National Society of Interior De
signers, told me firmly when I
asked her what she thought of
the emphasis on traditional de
signs. She made this point: If a
young homemaker is undecided in
her tastes, she might be wise to
stick to the designs created by the
master English cabinetmakers,
Two approaches to traditional
styling are evident. One is the
line-for-line reproduction of the
finest antiques. This will probably
be most appreciated by the home
maker who is already devoted to
English traditional, and who has
a comparatively generous budget
The second approach is the
adaption of designs and motifs of
the old masters, and the mixing of
more than one element in a single
piece. This may he of particular
interest lo the homemaker who
likes traditional with a dash of 20th
century. In the main, adaptations
are available in medium price
ranges.
A good example: The extensive
collection designed bv Morton
Gershun and Charles Haight. In
this medium-priced collection, ma
hogany, the traditionalist wood, is
fused in a soft nutty brown tinish.

Every day is full of surprises.
As one of my friends was chat
ting, she gestured with her hands
I watched, fascinated, and then
the reason for my piqued inter
est dawned . . . "She has red
hands."
Now, this may sound ridiculous
in this day of hand creams, sooth
ing lotions, and less-harsh deter
gents. I was sure the red-hand
era was past. Apparently, it is
not.
Winter, especially, is a difficult
season for you hotnemakers who
are in and out of the house, on
the w ay lo the grocery, taking the
youngsters to school or whisking
off lo a neighborhood kaffec
klatch. In between, you are wash
ing dishes, doing the laundry and
quite possibly bathing a baby.
Taking care of our hands is
like brushing after every meal
we sometimes forgel, or feel
we don't have the time.
As a double protection before
you go outdoors, use a special
wind-and-wcather lodon and slip
on your gloves. If you are off (or
winter weekend, add a lotion
in an unbreakable plastic tube to
your "must" supplies. Or, if you
are merely joining the family ice
