Late Thursday evening Adriene Comely went down to the residence of his father J. B. Comely on Water street, there being no one at home. On entering he was sur prised to find the front door open. After remaining a few minutes he started to go away, and was fasten ing the door, when a man who was inside attempted to pass him and escape. He seized the fellow by the arm and the latter drew a pistol and fired twice, the ball passing through Mr. Comedy's sleeve. Another man then ap peared from around the coiner of the house and both tied. Now that Albany is the center of extensive railroad building and fast adding to the many enterprises becoming the chief business city of the Wiliamette Valley, the shrewd man with an eye on the main chance, will invest in real estate in this city. All kinds of rumors are afloat in neighboring towns now concerning me ureson I'acitn- Th iatp.t. i ! a dispatch from Spokane Falls to the Portland 2v"ews. It says: "Private information received "to day from Boise City, Idaho, savs that the Chicago & Northwestern road is extending its line to con nect with the Oregon Pacific at Boise City. This line will then be extended north through the Palouse Valley and Spokane to the Canadian boundary. The Ca nadian Pacific is negotiating with the Spokane & Northern, a local company, to build a line from Xen Sehaoner. The new steam schooner now being built at Oneatta by Messrs. Schrader and Loll, is progressing rapidly. The gentlemen have from fifteen to twenty carpenters em ployed upon her, and are hurrying her construction forward as fast as the nature of the work will admit. J. F. Hanrahan, an experienced ship carpenter, is the builder, and he is sparing no pains to make it staunch and safe. The dimensions of the vessel are as follows: Length, 84 feet; breadth of beam, 20 feet; depth of hold, 7 feet, 0 inches. She will be rigged with sails and also with steam. The work of constructing the proposed telegraph line between i this city and Lebanon has been commenced, the poles being all distributed along the line. Edwin Bailey, who has been for many years assistant keeper of Foulweather light house, lias re cently been promoted to keeper at Point Wilson, on Puget Sound. The W. C. T. Northern Paoiflc Raiiroafl i'airwealber shot. In the Conconnully mining dis trict, Idaho, a few days since II. W. Fairweater, of Sprague, was shot. Farther particulars of the shooting were not learned, hut it is said that a quarrel occurred be tween some men in regard to a claim, and that Mr. Fairweather, in attempting to separate the com batants was shot in the shoulder. Mr. Fairweather was formerly superintendent of the Oregon Pa cific railroad and is we.ll known here. The M linker Warehouse. Geo. Simpson, who returned yesterday from Munkers states that the warehouse at that place will be filled to its utmost capacity with wheat this year. Owing to the failure of the Narrow Gauge rail road to build their proposed switch to Scio much of the wheat about that place will be hauled to j Munkers Railroad Laborers from California. Fifty white laborers arrived in this city yesterday from California via Yatjuina ami went at once to the front to work on the Oregon Pacific railroad. About 100 China men also came on the last trip of the Willamette Valley to engage in this work, and other w hite la borers from San Francisco will arrive on the next trip of the steamer. The scarcity of men, occasioned by the busy harvesting season, is what brings men from California to engage in this raij road work. Mr. himpson expects to II. It is stated that the Oregon De velopment Company is about to contract with .1. F. Hanrahan for the building of another new tug, in which the machinery now in the old Favorite will be used. The run of salmon has not yet fairly commenced, though consid erable numbers have been taken and the canneries have been in operation a portion of the time.
