Theso aro tho real agents of decay. This Is not tho only way that a fungus can enter a sound stick of timber; for If a good stick Is lying clojc to a rotting one, tho mycelium may grow over or through tho moist grcind and so reach tho sound stick, which it Immediately attacks. Sometimes, too, when a tree Is cut It already has a fungus growing In Its wood. If tho fungus happens to be a truo parasite that Is, If It can grow only In living tissues It will die when the tree is feiled: but If it has been accustomed to growing In tho honrtwood of tho tree, whicn Is practically dead. It may continue to Hvo and develop even aftor tho troe has been snwed Into timber. Wood la composed of minute colls. In this way tho fungi enn develop until they extend through out every portion of tho timber. Tho simplest why of prolonging tho life of timber exposed to tho attack of wood-do3troylng fungi Is to reduco tho niolsturo content of tho wood. Tho amount of wator In green timber varies according to the part of the treo from which tho wood Is cut. It Is the portion of tho tree, therefore most susceptible to attacks from fimgi. Hcartwood, which cai usually be distinguished from sap wood by Its darker or more reddish color, contains, on tho other hand, much less moisture. It Is thoroforo more durnble than sapwood. But because Its poros aro stopped up by gums and resins It dies out much less rnpldly than the more poroui sapwood. In almost every caso as much care should bo taken thor ughly to dry out the hcartwood as In tho case of tho molster sap wood. By piling the timber so as to per mit free access of air all around It the moisture content of timbers of certain sizes can bo reduced to about IB or 18 per cent. Of course tho cltmato has a groat lnfluonce on tho rato at which tho wood dries out and tho total amount ot moisture tt loses, Tho moisture content of alr-drv wood can be still further reduced by kiln-drying; and this Is empolyed to a considerable extont, but usually tor other purposes than increasing tho durability of tho wood. More over, either air-dry or kiln-dry wood has tho power to reabsorb moisture when exposed to tho atmos phere In damp situations, and so tho benefits ot drying, as far as dura bility Is concerned, are only mod erate. Yet tho Increased llfo which It gives Is, in nearly all cases, more than sufficient to repay tho added cost ot seasoning. The strength of partially seasoned timber, other things being equal, in crcaso as tho amount ot moisture It contains decreases. Thoroughly seasoned timber of small sizes Is sometimes three or even four times as strong as tho same timber, when green. Moreover the process of drying out. important but llttlo un derstood chnnges tnko place in tho organic contonts of tho wood cells, by which tho wood Is not only rend ered less attractive to fungi, but is mado more permeablo nnd so better prepared for prosorvatlvo tcatment. All timber should bo thoroughly sea soned before bolng exposed to do- cay. An exterior coating secured by dipping a post In a thin solution'of cement or othor material that will harden on tho post Is not nn effec tive protection, because In shrink ing or swelling tho wood forms cracki through which decay ontors. By Chemlcnl Impregnation. By far tho best method of check ing tho growth of fungi, however, is to deprive them of food. This can bo dono by Injecting poisonous substances Into tho timber, nnd bo changing tho organic mattor from foods sultablo for fungi Into power ful fungicides.
