B DAILY CAPITAL JOURNAL. SALEM. OREGON, MONDAY, JUNE 22, 1008 ilNCOLN COUNTY 6ETS TWO HIGH SCHOOLS -SMILES s Result of Wise Action of County Com missioners On Popular Vote - According to the following account from the Ynqulna Dny Nows-Lender, Toledo and Newport are both to have high schoels: .,,.,, Last Friday bb a day of chuck full of Interest to the people of Newport find" Toledo in particular and tho county In general. That was tho day "the commissioner's court convened to net upon the matter of establishing A county high school. as waB deter mined by a majority vote at tho late election. There were two aspir ants for the school Newport and Toledo. . Both parties had delegations in at tendance, nnd both parties felt them selves entitled to tho school bit were a little doubtful, as to how tho court would decide Is pressed to a .vote. This element of uncertainty put both parties on their good bo liavlor and tho conference wns marked by, apparently, the moat friendly feeling. After the court had listened to tho arguments nnd sug- two towns they offered to compro mise the matter by leaving the ques tion Of establishing a perraanont slto to the voters of tho county, and as a vote cannot bo taken until Novem ber, 1910, they offered to assist tho school boards in both Newport and Toledo to maintain high schools by appropriating $800 to eachjjoard to pny tne Baianes or tno principals in tho hlEh school departments. TIiIb proposition appeared to be satisfactory to both delegations. Wo think this was the best thing tho court could have done. This plan will give the county two high schools instead of one at a minimum of cost. There Is another feature of this action that in our opinion will result in benefit to the county. Newport nnd Toledo both hope to land tho prize two years from now; their clinnces will hang on tho char actor of their high schools tho otto 'that gives tho best service will thoh stand the best show with the voters. gestionis of the representatives of tho Go in, gentlemen, and do your beat. r A Grand Fnmlly Medicine.
