About Vernonia eagle. (Vernonia, Or.) 1922-1974 | View Entire Issue (Dec. 11, 1925)
In the presentation of two views of the school facilities of Vernonia today, a vast change has came over the valey in the past three years. Thirty-five years ago the old-time students then went to a one room school house shown in the bottom picture made from logs, today the Vernonia students go to three schools, two grades and a high school. The sub jects then could not be delved into as they are to day. The course of study was inadequate. Today in the fast growing city of Vernonia we have the Lin coln and Washington school (the Washington is not shown in this group) comprising several rooms and several teachers to handle the pupils. • The Lincoln school has as its teachers: Primary, Mrs. Wilkerson; second grade, Mrs. Larrimore; third and fourth, Miss Morris; fifth and sixth, Mrs. Knowles. * i f * SCHOOL BUILDING OF THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO r - I The Washington school was completed a year ago at a cost of $22,000. It has as its advisors: Primary, Mrs. Ilay; second, Miss Kizer, third, Miss Aus tin; fourth. Miss McDonald; from the fifth up in the different departments are: Miss Weed, Miss Enstrom, Miss Condit, Mrs. Rodgers, and Mrs. Hadley has charge of the seventh and eighth grades. A. W. Johns is superintendent of both grade sch9ols. The grades are co mposed of 509 pupils UL Äh I ' là- The faculty of the high school are: J. B. Wilkerson, principal, who has charge of the Math and civic classes ; Mr. Austin, science ; Miss Cecilia S. Bell, english; Mrs. Marjorie Cole, languages; Mr. Thos. Here was displayed the first Christmas tree in Ver nonia. Miss Loveless was the teacher, and some of our older citizens may recognize in the picture Omor Spencer. Josh Rose, Wm. Will and Perry Mellinger, Jim Edmonds, Pete and Clarence Palmer, Bert Hasford, Lena Tucker, Oral Spencer Falkner, Mrs. Clara Cleveland, Sadie and Anna Campbell, Guy, Bert and Clyde Mills and others we do not know.
