VERNONIA, OREGON, FRIDAY DECEMBER 18. 1925 —------------------------------------ :— THE SHIP IS DOCKING o ■ e a o 9 4 “When my ship comes in,” has been applieJ to every delay in reach ing certain goals or realizing for tunes. After the approach of this marvelous ship for seventy-five years, she is now in the harbor and docking at the gold fields of southern Oregon. The mineral deposits of this district are too well known to go into details on that subject at this time, other than the statement that the district is proving richer than oft repeated descriptions have placed it. As one of the world’s best authori ties and geologists recently »marked "Why go to foreign fields or to Alaska to suffer hardships, bulla roads and spend fortunes in looking for treasures that exist in greater quantities right here at home.” The little mining town of Gold Hill in Jackson county, is the hub of this rich gold district, formii g a circle fifty miles in each direction. Here mother earth has practically •very known mineral, especially rich in gold and copper. Surfice digging with wonderful success as been car ried on here far many years, but deep mining to the base ore has just been brought to the fore through the past eight months work of the Kel- mar-Vanpet company. Thia company is a cHiperntlve company of Vernon ia men, who have had little to say, choosing rather to saw wood—dig and get results—their reward is well merited. A. W. Petersen a Vernonia merchant, is president of this com- pany an<Lyyry active on the subject; the board of directon is composed of Wm. Martineau, A. E. Kellogg, Paul Robinson, C. C. Brown, Chas. D. White, Dr. Hughes and Wm. Lind say, all Vernonia citizens with the exception of one. It is the Kelmar-Vanpet company that is now making southern Oregon Their development fend discoveries hsve created a new era for the state. Their principle mine to one of the richest in the west; they are pro ducers. Good Judgement, some fin ancial investment, the spirit of chsnce snd perserverance have won. It is this company that is responsi ble for the actual building of the fint unit of a smelter at Gold Hill, work on which is now well under way Here is a company purely Ore gonian; a mine, that has no stock to sell. They are in a tunnel five hundred feel and their ore at last station to valued at (200 to (300 per ton. Mining men from various states and foreign fields have recently vis ited th*8 r’<^> strike and pronounce it marvelous, the greatest new mine of the country. Situated within a quarter mile of the Southern Pacific railroad, Jok ing the city limits of Gold Hill and on a good graveled highway, makes it easy of access. The progress made, the distance in on the tunnel work, 'have been done for a few thous and dollars, where the same pro gress in some mining districts would have cost the promoters probably millions. And.now with success as sured and the building of a smelter, this vast mining district of southern Oregon is at the beginning of a min ing boom to equal that of the Klon dike. Much new industrial wealth will be added to our state and to southern Oregon cities will enlarge. To men with nerve, the love of ad venture and pride in Oregon develop, meat work,is due credit for their ef- \ forte. The mining world is watching ’the progress of the district, the Northwest to talking of the “findx," isd Oregon to ever appreciative ef iew industrial development. ! I --------- 4,--------- A. L.
