"June and I don't play a couple of kids In this show," Van grinned. "We look more like Dorothy McHnle and Jack Mulhall. It's a serious drama - at least it had belter be. "And who knows, if a good movie comes along June and I might just decide to team up again." Corvallls-A board product containing only bark from Douglas fir or pondcrosa pine can be manufactured without adding expensive resins for bonding, according to Lelf D Espenas, director of forest products research at the Ore gon Forest Research center. Corvallis. More than 1,200.000 tons of bark from Douglas fir are burned annually in Oregon as mill residue. Under proper conditions of heat and pressure, natural substances in bark react to bond together, forming a board similar to wood particle board and hardboard. Resins for bonding are responsible for nearly half the costs of manufacturing other particle boards. Research on this project in eluded preparation of raw material from slabs of Doug las fir bark, production of boards, testing of samples and studying economics of commercial production of the product. In addition, a pilot plant run was conducted at the plant of a private com pany. Studies showed that a manufacturing system for wood particle board can be adapted to make bark board. Physical properties of bark board can be altered by changing pressure and by ap plying overlay materials. Production of board from bark of West Coast hemlock and white fir also was inves tigated. Bark from these spe cies was much less satisfac tory than from Douglas fir and ponderosa pine. A report on this study Is available upon request to the Oregon Forest Research cen ter, Corvallis. Studies to develop uses for wood residues of Oregon are part of continuing research supported by the wood indus tries of the state through a tax on logs harvested.
