Rait Admitted Not Poisonous - Albany, Ore. - (UPD - A chemical engineer for the Bu reau of Mines has admitted he exaggerated a police report to frighten a thief Into return ing a stolen life raft. A report from state police aid the person who took a rubber life raft from a log pond here might die from touching it. Arden Fugate, the engineer, aid he told police he wanted to frighten the thief into go ing to a doctor for treatment 10 he could get the raft back. He said the poison chemical he earlier said was on the raft, tctra ethyl pira phos phate, was in fact a chemical used in warfare - but very diluted in civilian use and used only for killing bugs. It could not kill a man in the diluted solution used in a log pond. MEDFORDktTRIBUNE SECTION B MEDFORD, OREGON, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1960 PAGES 1 to 8 Study Indicates Radiation Helps Infective Growth Los Angeles (Science Serv-ice)-The infective process of viruses may sometimes be aided by radiation. ; This has been discovered by Drs. Jia-Hsi Wu and Irving Rappaport of the University of California, Los Angeles, botany department. These two UCLA scientists have demon strated this effect in working with two strains of the to bacco mosaic virus. They found that when they inoculated pinto bean leaves with the U-l strain of ,the tobacco mosaic, virus char acteristic infections of plant viral disease appeared in the leaves. Inoculation with the milder U-2 strain did not pro duce any manifestation of in fection. When the leaves are inoc ulated with a mixture of the two strains, the number of infections is markedly re duced. This suggests that there may be competition be tween the two strains, that the U-2 strain interferes with the infectious process of the U-l strain within the same leaf cell. When the leaves inoculated with the mixture are irrad iated with ultraviolet light, infections are increased. The scientists suggest that leaf cells where the two strains of virus are competing, ultra violet radiation may knock out the U-2 strain, allowing the U-l strain to resume its damaging infectious process. The probability of the ra diation killing the U-2 par itcles without damaging the U-l particles is directly pro portional to the number of new infections appearing af ter irradiation, they note. Roger's salary gets divvied up to pay our in stallments, loans, credit-card bills. It dissolves so fast I never really see it. Last week Roger got a brainstorm. He went to a fi nance company and got them to take over all our debts. Now we just owe them $9,000 which we must pay off at 11 per cent interest. And my husband is thinking of buy ing a second car! 1 wish he'd buy me one good night's sleep. What if he should lose his job? Roger W. -Marcia was rais ed by a Caspar Milquetoast. Her father believed you must never spend a dollar unless you have three. So they never had a thing. My mother darn ed and patched clothes until you couldn't recognize them, even though they could well afford new ones. And in the end their savings all went to pay hospital and doctor bills and funeral expenses. I want more than that out of life. "Venture capital" isn't only for big business. It's for me too. I work for the gas com pany. I make a decent salary working on the pipes. We have hospitalization and health accident insurance from the job. We'll never be rich, but we'll have a steady income. If I listened to Marcia and waited until we had the money saved up first for each thing we want, we'd still be saving for a car. This way we have a home and car, air-conditioning and every electric appliance you can name. "Easy payments" is the an swer. That's how the govern ment gets things. That's how millionaires get things. What's wrong with borrowing and owing? I wish Marcia could under stand that things are different and she hat nothing to worry about. The Council: The only thing wrong with borrowing and owing is borrowing and ow ing more without first paying back. In her own world Mar cia is battling the insidious spiral that has laid low em pires. Pay-as-you-go means live within your means to Marcia but to Roger it means Pay-as-you-go-into-debt and go now, pay later. Their conflict boils down to: What s money for? Peace of mind or "posses sions?" Marcia would vote for the former and gladly sacri fice a wall oven or color tele vision. Roger may think that his peace of mind depends up on having things he can point to "with pride," but in reality he has no peace and his pride is a shaky one, for the Day of Reckoning looms over him constantly like a black cloud. "A rich man is one who has more than he spends." This is the opinion not of a Caspar Milquetoast but of a common- sense consumer named Bcar- nard Baruch. With Marcia's urge toward conservatism in spending; perhaps Roger can still become a "rich" man some day. Despite his over whelming debts and the new ones promised by the birth of their baby, he may be able to plan a more solvent future.
