Johnson-Allyson Team
Gets Together Again
For Television Show
i By VERNON SCOTT
Hollywood - (UPU - Van
"Johnson and June Allyson,
long a movie romuntic team
get together for the first time
on television this week.
It started in 1042 when Van
and June played paltycake in
"Two Girls and a Sailor" at
MGM. They went together
like Abbott and Costello.
: Thereafter the young stars
vere teamed in nine pictures,
among them "Remains To Be
Seen," and "High Barbarce."
Van always played the
clean-cut boy next door while
"Uune exemplified the girl
next door In a Peter Pan col
Jar. It was pretty sticky go
ing sometimes, but movicgo-
trs loved em.
"By the time we'd complet
ed our tenth movie we both
wanted out," Johnson sighed
"11 got so we always knew
what we were going to do
before wa looked at the
script.
Sign of Relief
j When their contracts were
completed at the studio Van
and June breathed a sigh of
relief and hoped they'd never
See one another again before
the cameras.
;i Since then the All-Amerlcan
couple has appeared separate
ly Jn scores of pictures, but
none prospered as did their
joint efforts.
Now, still clean-cut and
looking like the couple next
door, Junie-pie and the for
mer bobbysox idol share top
billing on CBS-TV's "The Du
Pont Show with June Ally
son." ,! '-'tor the first lime In our
Careers we're playing a mar
ried couple," Van said. "But
it's like old home week. It's
not generally known, but
when June and I were starv
ing hopefuls in New York
years ago we used to date one
another.
Old Friends Neighbors
"Now she and her husband
Dick Powell, live a block
away from us and our kids
go to school and play togeth
er." Next year Johnson may
turn the tables on June by
having her appear as a guest
on his show. He has refused
many TV series but admits
now that he may star in a
series for Powell's Four Star
Productions in the fall of 1061.
Until then, he will play the
title role in "Music man" in
England.
"June and I don't play a
couple of kids In this show,"
Van grinned. "We look more
like Dorothy McHnle and
Jack Mulhall. It's a serious
drama - at least it had belter
be.
"And who knows, if a good
movie comes along June and
I might just decide to team
up again."
Corvallls-A board product
containing only bark from
Douglas fir or pondcrosa pine
can be manufactured without
adding expensive resins for
bonding, according to Lelf D
Espenas, director of forest
products research at the Ore
gon Forest Research center.
Corvallis.
More than 1,200.000 tons of
bark from Douglas fir are
burned annually in Oregon
as mill residue.
Under proper conditions of
heat and pressure, natural
substances in bark react to
bond together, forming a
board similar to wood particle
board and hardboard. Resins
for bonding are responsible
for nearly half the costs of
manufacturing other particle
boards.
Research on this project in
eluded preparation of raw
material from slabs of Doug
las fir bark, production of
boards, testing of samples
and studying economics of
commercial production of the
product. In addition, a pilot
plant run was conducted at
the plant of a private com
pany.
Studies showed that a
manufacturing system for
wood particle board can be
adapted to make bark board.
Physical properties of bark
board can be altered by
changing pressure and by ap
plying overlay materials.
Production of board from
bark of West Coast hemlock
and white fir also was inves
tigated. Bark from these spe
cies was much less satisfac
tory than from Douglas fir
and ponderosa pine.
A report on this study Is
available upon request to the
Oregon Forest Research cen
ter, Corvallis.
Studies to develop uses for
wood residues of Oregon are
part of continuing research
supported by the wood indus
tries of the state through a
tax on logs harvested.
