SILENT ON W AflHIrTGTON, May 3 1 AT ) President Roosuvelt declined today to say "yea" or "no" to the question of whether he was eon suited before hand on Harry Hopkins' statement endorsing a candidate for the Dem ocratic senatorial nomination In Iowa. Hopkins told newsmen last week If he were citizen of Iowa he would vote for Representative Wearln In preference to Senator Gillette. The president said that If he ans wered the question yes It would bn Interpreted as favoring one candi date. If he answered no, he said It would be Interpreted to the advan tage of the other candidate. In fu ture, he added, he would not answer i such questions either from candidates or the press. Asked whether he waa supporting j one of Iowa candidates over the oth er he replied that he was taking the position he had taken In previous primaries and refused to amplify that statement.
