He promiitly lust It on February 1 HOii. to Tommy Iturns. a Canadian, tin a HO-round fight at l.os A'le.os. Hums remained in front of thy park of pugilists for almost three years. In that time he suceeesfullv Uefooilfd his title against Philadelphia Jack O'ilrien, whom he defeateti in 20 rounds, and Bill Hiiuires of Australia, who stood up only two minutes and eight seconds. iJuring all of this time a big strap ping negro, John Arthur Johnson, had been knocking pugilistic people right and left and In his off moments, en deavoring to get a crack at the cham pion. Hut the champion always had some excuse. -Johnson's manager trailed Burns around the United States and to England, hut oould not get hlni to meet the former cotton jannoer from (lalveston. I'ndaunted, be kept on the trail of 1'urns and fi nally cornered him In Australia, where a match with "lll Artha" was finally arranged. 9 W Jack Johnson, the only negso who ever held the heavyweight cham pionship, got it as a present from Santa Claus on Christmas Uay, 1 POX. Ilo didn't find It in his Htncklng, but In n couple of big boxing gloves that Tommy llurns never forgot. Johnson met liurns at Sydney, X. S. He floored llurns for nine countR in the first round and sent htm to the canvas agnin In the neeoud round, but the champion bounded back on his feet Immedi ately. In tho latter part of the fight. Johnson rained rights and lefts upon the face and body of liurns, whose mouth and eyes were bndly distorted from the shower of blows. A swollen jaw added to his misery. He was 111 no state of mind to enjoy Johnson's humor, a characteristic of his race that never left the negro, even In Ills defeat years later. Always ho smiled and frequently ho uttered mock encouragement to the ninn bo was whipping. He talked continu ally, tnuntlng Burns nnd daring him to attack, the defiance ever softened with a grin. Now and then Johnson cast aside bis smile and attended strictly to business. It was so in the 14th round at Sydney. As hooo ns his distressed opponent teft bis corner, tho negro flew at him like a tiger and, using belli hands unmercifully, soon had the champion tottering. The police then jumped in and stopped the fight nnd tho referee declared Johnson the winner. Earliest coins wore mndo In Asia Minor of silver and gold. GEO. 16 18 S.
