Did you ever hear a potato snore? or an apple sneeze? or a geranium breathe heav ily? A geranium plant In a glass case at room 213-218 agricultural building. Is causing a great deal of comment by its heavy breathing during Farmers' week. A glass tube connected with the case containing the flower empties Into a trap filled with crystal clear or rum hydroxide.--As the flower takes a 'deep breath it, can be plainly seen by the bubbles in the trap. As the breath 4s liberated it combines with the solu tion, making it milky white in color. Two apples are almost out of breath in inother jar. It is set in a glass tray filled with water, and as the ap ples have breathed most of the oxygen from the jar, the water has risen in side nearly covering them. The exhibit is made to demonstrate beyond a doubt that plants really breathe like human beings. V. I U ASHLAND, June 17 We want some good warm, sunshiny days in order tit ripen up the cherry crop, for this fruit will be in demand on Monday, June 2". when 2nit or mora of the owners ami managers of principal building's thru out the country, including big hotel properties, manufacturing concerns, and business blocks, will pass through Ashland on their way north, touring the Pacific coast region from southern California to Seattle and probably Hritlsh Columbia. Tor the time being the "Cherrian Day" of the Willamette will he transferror to Ashland. The old exhibit building at. the depot will come into lis own again for the time being. Incident to this cherry festival event, In connection with which a bevy of Ashland girls will serve the fruit to the tourist visitors. Supplementing this distribution, the chamber of com merce plans a welcoming committee which will extend the glad hand to the pleasure Jungeters in extending greet ings to the big company of easterners. The irrepressible Jesse Wiuburn has been appointed chairman by Ihe'diam ber of commerce of the Fourth of July parade committee, un assignment that means some energetic work, as the ap pointee is not only a hustler, but his purse strings are open when circum stances indicate that" financial aid should be forthcoming. It is Wlnburn's Idea to make the celebration here n county event, instead of merely a local one, and his efforts will be along that line, similar to the picnic event for the young folks of the county, recently given in their behalf at his well known camp surroundings up the canyon. Of course the Fourth of July observance will eclipse any ordinary picnic outing, and extensive plans are being made accordingly. To he exact, the sum of two thou sand dollars and thlrty-fivo cents is the exact amount which Ashland sub scribed for Chinese and Near Hast re lief at the last, campaign drive hero in. behalf of famine sufferers. Formal receipts have arrived covering these remittances, and conveying thanks for the generous supply of clothing also forwarded. There will probably be further requisitions, especially from the "Near East" so termed, as the bell raising Greeks and Turks still keep on the warpath, not having become signatories to the socallcd armistice. When Givln Butler purchased nnd had erected in Litbia park the statue of Abraham Lincoln, as a memorial to his stepfather, Jacob Thompson, pio neer of UiIb Bection, ho set the pace as an 6xntnple for other individuals and organizations to follow. Now tho suggestion is being made that the Red Cross honor Clara Burton In like man ner, and that the Women's Christian Temperance Union pay the tribute of love nnd affection to the memory of Frances Wlllard, these tributes being added to the Lincoln statue and sol diers memorial tablet in the park. Many still remain of the opinion that the soldiers monument, recently un veiled in Ashland cemetery, should have .been placed amidst tho park environment. With thoso accessions, together with tho Carter memorial fountain on the plaza, It would only be a question of time when tho "Granite City, as applied to Ashland, should be changed, to the '"Monumental City" designation. At n recent meeting of the Auxiliary club it was voted that Individual mem bers should contribute to the Red Cross in behalf of a fund which will be devoted to relief of flood victims of Pueblo, Colorado. The children's play grounds In the park have also benefit ed by the auxiliary's donations. A reminder Is in order concerning the Illinois picnic and reunion here on Friday, June 21, in tho parks. Vl'hls is a valley affair, and not merely a local one. Natives of Illinois and long-tlmo residents of tho old commonwealth, are all Invited. A program is being prepared, announcements pertaining to which will he published later. MARRIED FOR THE DURATION OF WAR (By International News Service.) ClllCAGO, ' June IB. A new variety of war romance was re- vealed here when Harold K. Car- tor, formerly of the A. K. F charged Mrs. Margaret Lamar Carter with having married him "for the duration of tho war." Ho sought and obtained a divorce." ' Tho decreo was granted when Carter offered In evidence a let- ! ter from his wife, which read: "I would have written you long ago but it seemed right to wait until the war was over ,nnd you were safely through that ex per- lence. With the end of the war comes the end of the contract I entered Into so hastily. I want to be released from It now. I'll not live with you again as your wife." The Carters met in March, 1917 and were married Juno 21. They 4 parted September 13, 1917. when Carter went overseas. Ho had enlisted on tho day war was do- clared. nriiLlN. N'o section of Irish public opinion has endorsed Lord Hugh Ce cil's latest suggestion of a settlement of the Irish question. The Cecil plan included the establishment of nvo small parliaments, one at Belfast ami the other at Dublin, with an additional "House of Instates" of lite members. Ireland was to have "complete fiscal autonoipy" and an army of Its own, but no navy. The nearest approach to approval comes from tbo Freeman's Journal which says that Lord Hugh "has goti the root of the Irish problem in his grasp, but he is afraid to go boldly for the solution without hedging condi tions." The hedging condition is held to he tho necessity for l ister agree ment, nnd this. It Is argued, means the maintenance of "the t'lster Veto" which "can always be relied uimiu to wreck any plan that would satisfy four-fifths of the people." The real crux remains In l ister. The majority in the northeast corner is attached to the Knglish connection. Tho picture of Queen Victoria occu pies, on the walls of the houses o Bel fast artisans or Antrim farmers, the place of honor accorded In nationalist bouses to bictures of Robert lhuiuet. and- other leaders of revolt against British rule. According to the I'lsler leaders no agreement will ever be pos sible with tho rest of Island which 1 implies separation from the Itrlllsh! empire.' Tbo war pictures which are to be shown in this city Monday and Tues day, June 20-21,' at the 1'age theatre, under the auspices of the Medford Post American Legion, promise to give theatre goers a thrill that even Griffith master productions have been unable to register. The name of this great picture Is "Powder River" for many years that has been the battle cry of the cowpunchers of Montana nnd Wyom ing and when the stolid Prussians and their allied hosts heard that war whoop coming from the lusty throats of the dare devils from tho great west in tho "big drive" they wore not only amazed, but. tho grim determina tion nnd doth-dofylng spirit that those great divisions possessed caused them to take to tho tall timhor. The 91st, 42nd, 32nd and 2nd divi sions nro all represented in tho re markable picture these film records are conclusive proof of tho metal of western soldiers and shows them from the time they sailed from American ports until they suspended their mag nificent fighting in France. Picture Scores Hit Matt Moore nnd Gladys Leslie, who have the leading roles In "Straight Is tho Road," tho new Paramount picture on view at tho Rlnlto theatre this week, have contributed much by their artistic portrayal to make that picture a groat hit.
