F(ir three hundred , i years, according to reliable records, j the Sierra Madre mountains of Simora j and Chihuahua, Mexico have held the j secret of a gold mine of fahuluus rich-1 ness and a vast treasure store of cold, mined and hidden away in an inacces sible tunnel. The romance of the gold hunter is written in the history of man s efforts through the centuries to reach andinent young ladies and Karl Tinker bring back to civilization this wealth of tho Old Tyopa mines. Murders and violence, have marked many of these efforts and still in many hardy breasts of this mining country today there Etill stirs the spirit which has promot ed many to bravo the dangers of star vation, thirst and death at the hands of Indian bands and outlaws In the search for gold. ..Mexico City contains records of the old mine and several prospectors, one of them .lack Dunn. .accredited discov erer of the Warren district, have re ported seeing ruins of the "old mine, but none ever reached there. According to records at the Mexican capital, in the latter part of the seven teenth century tho Isolated village of Old Tyopa was raided by Indians, who destroyed the town and killed all the lnhahilants except a priest. After wandering for several weeks, the priest arrived at a little town called Auga Frill, on the Faqui river, where ho was received and cared for by a Mexican "-family. 1 lis hardships caused his death, but before Uo died he gave to the family a description and map of the mining camp, lie also loported that the gold obtained from seven years of mining had been stored In an old tunnel because of the Im possibility of shipment to civilization. The story and map, it i3 said, have been handed down from family to fam ily for generations. Those who at tempted to reach the camp lost their outfits and muny did not return. The Indians for years menaced all prospec tors and this condition still exists, augmented by bands of outlaws. . -Max Covlta, for several years Mex ican consul at Nuco, is said to have been the latest possessor of. the priest's map. -He. declared he twice succeeded in getting as far as Casa lllanca from which the ruins of Old Tyopa are visible and it was reported he had not given up hopes of reaching the place at his death several ..years ago. Ilort (trover, a local man, twice started with two companions to make tho jerilous journey, hut was forced back because of insufficient equipment Indians and outlaws. Some remarkable gold specimens have been brought back from , the vicinity of the Old Tyopa, but so far as known no one ever has reached the mines since the old town was destroy ed centuries ago. I RIGA. Most of the younger genera tion of Russians are bolshevik, says Captain Mcriort C. Cooper, of Jackson ville, Fla., the American flyer who was captured by Russians while serving in the Polish army npd recently escaped from a Moscow prison. He attributes this to the Bolshevik educational sys tem, under which communism is taught in the schools. . "The schools are all red," he said, 'and the educational program pre scribes that the first thing to bo de veloped in the mind of the child is the 'revolutionary conscience.' In prison. 1 saw, several times, children visit their parents, the latter being anti Bolshovik. The children were 'reds' and accepted' their parents' Imprison ment philosophically, wondering how they could go against the tenets they had been taught to absorb in the class room." Vying with this'system of educating tho children, said Captain Cooper, is the wonderful propaganda system by which the Bolshevik! attempt to con vert the adults. "Their communist lecturers work even In the prisons, trying to convert the prisoners," he continued. "They even tried it on me. There were lec tures or classes held very frequently. If a man said he was converted and could convince the prison committee of that fa.ct, he generally was released. "Further in the line of skilled pro paganda was the excellent treatment of the Polish war prisoners just before the repatriation agreement of the Polish-Russian peace treaty. Before each bunch was repatriated all of the soldiers in it were given new clothes and new shoes, being well fed for sev eral weeks, so that when they arrived , in Poland they looked well fed, well dressed and. in short, were walking advertisements for the soviet govern ment." Generally. Captain Cooper said, con- diiions in the prisons were very bad RUSSIA WILL BE ALL RED J THE NEXT GENERATION ,tey were returned to Polaiul, iimlor port, near : the mouth 1 ioin the sinmlioint of diet, lint tharjand she iuformt'd me (he received no personal W-treutmeni. So I started and soon after reaching Medford, started on for Ashland in tho regular Medford-Asbland auto stage, but when I reached '.hero, learned that Dr. Ilulgin was to preach in Talent that forenoon, so not to be disappointed, altogether wont to tho Congregational Church and hoard the pastor, Kov. .ludson Oldfield preach. He preached a good logical sermon and had a good audience, f also at tended the Sunday school before preaching and there was quite a num ber of people there, but many of thorn were old people and quite a number of girls, but very few boys, and but two young men. It is a sad fact that so few of tho boys after they roach their "teens' attend church or Sunday school.
