who stood up only two minutes and

Johnson rained rights and lefts upon
the face and body of liurns, whose

from the shower of blows. A swollen
jaw added to his misery.
He was 111 no state of mind to enjoy
Johnson's humor, a characteristic of
his race that never left the negro,
even In Ills defeat years later. Always
ho smiled and frequently ho uttered
mock encouragement to the ninn bo

to attack, the defiance ever softened

Now and then Johnson cast aside

flew at him like a tiger and, using
belli hands unmercifully, soon had
the champion tottering. The police
then jumped in and stopped the fight
nnd tho referee declared Johnson the
winner.
