Contributed Photo Heppner Elemen tary School students par ticipated in the team State Chess for Success Tourna ment in Portland on March 12. They competed in the K. - 5th Grade Division. The stu d e n ts played five games and had some wins, stalemates and losses. Joe Jones was the captain and his jobs in cluded checking the boards for correct set up, reporting scores, and also encourag ing his team m ates. The competition was tough with HES first and second grad ers having to play fourth and fifth graders. The team came home with the first place trophy for the best Chess Mate T-Shirt design. The design was created by Vin- ny Navarrete. Joe Jones and Kai Arbogast competed in the Individual State Tourna ment on March 13. They also had some wins, stale mates and losses.
