A total of $155,453 was awarded to 29 recipients, bringing the total for 2009 to over $575,000. Local o rg an iz a tions funded in the forth quarter for 2009 are: B oardm an Park and Recreation (operating funds for summer “Funtas- tic Kidz” and “Teen Sum mer Recreation” programs) $6,000; Irrigon Multi-cul tural Arts Center (Pigeon removal/cleanup-Art Cen ter building) $10,000; Ir rigon Watermelon Festival (buy construction materials to com plete new snack shack) $2,500; Neighbor hood Center of South Mor row County (Neighborhood Center facility accessibility improvement) $ 10,000; and Oregon Lions Foundation (Sight and Hearing Mobile Health Screening Program) $7,500. T he W ild h o rse Foundation Board will consider awarding grants to applications that cover the areas of public health and safety, education, the arts, historic preservation, gam bling addiction ser vices, salmon restoration, environmental protection, and cultural activities. The quarterly deadlines for re quests are January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1. All referrals are considered confidential, and services are provided at no cost. The parent, legal guardian, or surrogate parent retains the right to refuse services and are provided procedural safeguards under federal and state law. Services include screening in areas of sus pected disabilities or ar eas o f delay, such as vi sion, hearing, motor skills, speech and/or language, behavioral, social em o tional and general devel opment. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Sign-ups will be held at 6 p.m. with play be ginning at 6:30 p.m. Buy-in Lemmon finishes sixth in state wrestling The Oregon Mid dle School State Wrestling Tournament was held on March 13 in Woodburn. About 270 wrestlers from 114 teams converged on Woodburn high school to determine who were the best middle school wres tlers in Oregon at each of the 17 weight classes. All of the state participants had to qualify by placing in the top four in one of the four Oregon regional qualifiers held the previous weekend. Middle school wrestling does not divide classes by school size so it truly is a competition to determine the best in the state. Eleven Mustang Jr. High wrestlers competed in the eastern Oregon quali fier in Boardman on March 6. H eppner was one o f approximately two dozen teams from 1A to 6A size schools at the qualifier. Ryan Smith, Skyler Palmer, Jeremiah Petzoldt, Shane Miles, Jared Lemmon, Jesse Boyd, Victor Meyer, Tres- ton Maben, John Propheter, Patrick Collins and Ethan including learning disabili ties, speech and language development, physical im pairments, vision or hearing problem s, mental retar dation, emotional distur bances, development delays (0-5 years old), autism/ pervasive developmental disorders, health impair ments, or traumatic brain injuries. Children birth to 3 years may not currently be demonstrating delays but be determined at-risk for developing a delay due to a known risk factor such as a medical condition. A free, appropriate, public education with a full continuum o f services is available. He again lost in the quarterfinals to the same opponent that defeated him at the eastern Oregon quali fier and again had to wrestle a m arathon six matches for the day; this time to place sixth in the state at 102 pounds. He finished the week with a combined 8-4 record in the regional and state tournaments and an overall 26-6 record for the 2009-2010 season. Last year Lemmon had also placed sixth at 90 pounds to become Heppner’s first state placer. is $40 Cash prizes will be awarded to the four top players. A sandwich and salad bar will be available and drinks will be served by Taylor’s. Two raffles will be held throughout the eve ning, a rifle raffle and a beef raffle. The rifle is a Savage Model II .243 Winchester bolt action with a 3x9 Bush- nell scope. The beef raffle includes two halves of beef, cut and wrapped. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. This annual event helps raise money for up keep and maintenance of the facility and the special program s the Am erican Legion and Auxiliary sup ports and offers throughout the year. All HES families are invited to this free event. Desert Sounds will be providing music sponsored by Wheatland Insurance and Bank of Eastern Oregon. The PE classes headed up by Mrs. Gentry have been working on their limbo moves for the occasion. There will be a make your own lei craft, HES top ten countdown, ap petizers and raffle baskets. The third annual Irish Boxing Smoker was held on Friday, March 12 in the Heppner High School gymnasium. The event was presented by the Heppner Chamber of Commerce and UROCK 96.1 FM. Men’s Prayer Breakfast cancelled The Men’s Prayer Breakfast scheduled for Sun day morning March 21, in Lexington will be canceled for this month. However, local churches and community members are invited to a special presentation on April 11 at 6 p.m. The music team from Umatilla Baptist Church will be presenting a music service at the Community Bible Church in Lexington.
