Heppner Elemen­
tary School students par­
ticipated in the team State
Chess for Success Tourna­
ment in Portland on March
12. They competed in the
K. - 5th Grade Division.
The stu d e n ts
played five games and had
some wins, stalemates and
losses.
Joe Jones was the
captain and his jobs in­
cluded checking the boards
for correct set up, reporting
scores, and also encourag­
ing his team m ates. The
competition was tough with
HES first and second grad­
ers having to play fourth
and fifth graders.
The team came
home with the first place
trophy for the best Chess
Mate T-Shirt design. The
design was created by Vin-
ny Navarrete.
Joe Jones and Kai
Arbogast competed in the
Individual State Tourna­
ment on March 13. They
also had some wins, stale­
mates and losses.
