We have, in this state, just es caped the passage of a water bond law that was framed for the pur pose of enabling capital to crawl i ..... i out of bearing any part ot the bur dons, and similar arguments in its tbis city should lead to a regular luvor were continually made as are tountv fair where the fine stock, f till being made Iforthe adoption in which Linn county surpasses of the one idea land taxation j Y other county in the state, method. For instance the Oregon-U'ould be exhibited, and the pro iau quotes the New York Times as I ducts of the farm displayed. unimriRarhable authority on the i "F" suhieirt.'anil tries to show in a most . specious argument that the only - - - - i right way is to tax the poor man's land but not to tax the rich man's money or. iiersonal property, for that kind of proiierty is sure to find si method of evasion, and it prt motes perjury and like sins t at tempt to tax personal property, it quotes the Times as saying: "The rate of city taxation it about 2xi cents on the dollar,', while the rate for stave purposes is only 2.(52 railL The real estate owner pays, therefore, but 2.62 on each $1000 toward the support of the statj government. If the personal prop erty tax were abolished altogether, it would raise the rate to only $2.81 on the $1000. This would diminish the taxation of the average farmer, who-e jersonal property is mostlv of the visible and tangible kin',j which the assessor gets readily on j , . ., his books, ard Slightly increase the ,.,-f(ha,.iti. nmwrtv nwnpr amount of the cit3' prupei t owner, wliose personal property is niaiiiiv of the intaiigilile and evasive kind." The kind of facetious argument . . . . . i .i.i brought OUl in Hie Statement the J exempt personal property , would reduce the fanners tax, is ; enough to make a inule laugh, ami i b . . , , . will probably induce every farmer ; in tie land to vetition the legisla-. tares to tax his laml and let the Xioh man's money go free,. 1 he whole sum and substance of tin s , j ariruments are to blind and bef in I- die the mind of the peop.e, simply to allow the aristocratic rich class to escape taxation, and place the ntir hiinlen uiion the men of moderate means. The real facts O i the case are that all property should bear its tqual share of taxa- tion, and the effort of law n akers should be directed towards pe venticg any evasion of just tax t ion, and let the ierjury part of tl e l.nsiness take care of itself. The dispatches say that a cyclone in Samoan waters, destroyed the three American war vessels Tren ton, Vandalia and Nipsic ; and the four German essels Adler, Glga, Eber and another, with the loss of nearly fifty American and one hun dred Germans. It seems that the very elements conspire to make sensational items fiom Samoa. The scheme of increasing the baiaries of congressmen is beintj promptly set down upon all over the country. These eastern con gressmen who are dissatisfied with the present salaries, should all re sign and go home. There are plenty of men just as capable who will serve without a repetition of the salary grab of 1871. An audacious theif, tn Denver, called upon the President ot the First National Bank of that city in ms private omce.anugeuiuga uwu. check on plea of exposing a bank roooery scneme, lorceu me iiichi dent to fill it out for $21,000 at the muzzle of a revolver, then go to the cashier and draw it and hand it to the robber who backed out of the oilice and disappeared. All this occured within call of dozens of clerks and the police. The fear of death causes men to do strange taings. The success of the horse show in E XV TO DA 1 linvv HI7MPHRKY.
