Washington, March 18. -Th? report ot the president and treasur er of the Woman's Silk Culture Association for tlie past year to the commissioner of agriculture has necn printed. Mrs, John Lucas is president. It savs: Tc the intel ligent observer the rapid progress of this industry is impossible. Orchards o! mulberry tres must be giown to perfection that will admit ot the picking t the leave belore the first real start can begin to the industry. During the past, few years much of the work baa been ot a dilatory character, yet let ding to great results, and evec with a few trees people have been learning to raise cocoons, and tree plantiog is becoming a systemized pfTort. Until this is general no in crease of production will occur. The United States could, iu a very short time, raise not only ita owu silk, but much more, and this once accomplished, at least $50, 000,000 per anoum would be gain ed. Yet the protection of a lew raises a hue and cry against this industrv, though t ere is n reason climat e or otherwise, why it could not be successfully planted. The report nf the treasurer, Mrs. H. P. Taylor, shows that diring the year nearly 25,000 coco n were bought of 168 persons in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illi nois, Indiana. Iowa, Kansas, Ken tuck, Maryland, Michigan, Min nesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York. North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, boutb Caro- I na, Virginia and West irgiota.
