A new and valuable soda spring his been discovered at Sodaville, and tbe citizens there want, ana should have, railroad connection with Albany. ' A bill is now before tue legislature - to" improve and make of them a public park The measure should pass. There is no reason why the springs of Linn county should not become as famous as some of the spring of California, which have received state aid. CANADA'S DEBT. Thoughtful citizens of Canada must find in the public debt state ment of the Dominion an argument for political union with the Un.ted States. The ambition to make a great and prosperous nation of a group of commonwealths strictly limited by nature in their produc tion and development is a lofty one. It is also exceedingly expen sive. In pursuance of this plan, the people of Canada, regardless of the limitations imposed by na ture, have sought to diversify and increase industry by a system of heavy taxes on imports. They hare constructed, under the stress of the national idei, an enormous system of artificial waterways, and have lent the aid of their treasury to the building of a line of trans continental railway. The natural result is such a burdening of the people as can be borne with diffi culty, and such an increase of the public debt, both absolutely and in proportion to population, as awakens alarm among! conserva tive people. The public debt of Canada has been multiplied by three since 1867. In tbe last ten years it hah received the tremend ous addition of $100,000,000. Of ciurse each political faction accuses the policy of the other as the caut-e of this threatening situation. Tbe outer public is interested only in the established fact. The debt in 1867 was, . in '- round numbeis, $75,000,000; at- the present time it is 1234,000,000. The debt pr capita, which' was then about $20, is now $46. And, although foreign trade and domestic production have been taxed to the limit to swell the resources of the treasury, the annual expenses of government increase more rapidly - than its income. Put in statistical form. tne public aeDt ot uanada nas in creased 215 per cent, in the last twenty years ; while, in the same period, expenditure has increased 172 per cent., taxation 170 per cent., foreign trade 62 per cent., and population only 38 per cent. "In other words," to quote the comment of one of the leading papers of Canada, "the increase in oar burden of debt and taxation has been four or five times as great ms the increase in our ability to bear these burdens." A republic like the United States, embracing all latitudes, all products, and all industries, can afford to lend its back to colossal expenditure, and ind itself, by natural development, embarrassed with a surplus in coinp. To emulate its example, equal natural resources and advan tages are necessary. Sooner or later the financial situation must convince Canada that she has to choose ltetweeu Uih abandonment of her gracious dream of becoming a first-class power, or join her in teiest and resources with those oi the United States. A Florida fruit grower has sue ceeded ?n marketing oranges in Philadelphia, which were sent for ward in dead of winter a mild winter in bulk. He saved the coet of packing, papering and as sorting at the point of shipment. The freight per hundred pounds was the same as for boxed fruit The shipment was divided into layers about eighteen inches deep. Out of a total British export of 391,291 tons of tin plate last year the United States took 292,693 tons ; and the cost of tin used in packing the products of this coun try was $12,000,000. Our imports of tin have increased steadily. In 1852 they were 477,714 boxes; in 1888 they were 5,085,313 boxes. Hot or cold baths at all hours fpiiKi Dilailon Notice. i JviMiE Bkll of Mount Carme! furnishes the following maiden speech of Abraham Lincoln, deliv ered in Pappsville, near Spring field, 111., nearly fifty ears ago. Lincoln was not then a lawyer, and had no intentions of becoming a lawyer. He had then made up his mind to learn the blacksmith's trade. His genius was recognized and he was suddenly nominated for the legislature. His first speech is roost interesting reading at this time. It was as follows : "Gentle men and fellow-citizens I piesume ! you all know who I am. I am hum- j hie Abraham Lincoln. I have been j solicited by many friends to be come a candidate for the legisla- ture. My politics are short and ! sweet. I am in favor of national banks, am in favor of the internal improvement system and a high protective tariir. The.-e are my ! sentiments and political principles. If elected I shall be thankful; if' not, it will be all the same." J Theke is t-aid to le a strong effort male in the east to attract emigrants from this country to the Argentine republic.
