Gold Hill (Or.), Feb. 8. Enoch
Botau and Jack Morris, prospect
ors, struck rich quartz vein three
feet in width in the old Blackwell
mining district yesterday, from
which they extracted sixty-eight
ounces of gold in' a few minutes.
At a depth of nine feet gold is in
leaf like letter paper, and is in lay
ers in the seams of the quartz, and
is believed to be permanent.

Hospital.
Madrid, Feb. 8. A Fire occur
red last night in military hospital.
Tbe 430 patients in the building
became panic stricken. Many
were unable to help themselves
and nurses and doctors devoted
themselves to the task of removing
them from the burning structure.
The governor of Madrid hurried to
to the scene and carried several
men suffering from contagious dis
eases to the barracks. One wing
of the hospital was destroyed. No
deaths occurred.

storm is the biggest ever known in
this part of Canada. Traliic is
practically at a stands'ill. The
passenger trains are snowe;l up
and ten to thirty-six hourj behind
time. No trains are running ex
cept through trains to Chicago and
New York. Seventeen hundred
passengers are on these trains.

threatens to prove a serious race
war has broken out in this city. A
tew weeks ago the tirm ol F. M.
Lestbrook & Sens, tobacco packers
imported a number of colored men
to work in their factory, c'aiiuing
that there are no white men heie
capable of performing the work of
stemming and stripping. The
action ou the part of the tirm
greatly enraged a number ot white
workingmen, and they sent notices
to the colored men, warning them
to leave town within ten days or
receive a summary punishment.
Threats were also made to burn tbe
factory and the homes of the im
ported laborers. But little atten
tion was paid to tbe threats and
Saturday night a lot of men went
to the home of Logan Collins, a
colored boss, and fired five shots in
the bouse. Collins returned and
fired, but no one was hurt on either
aide, Toe factory owners say they
will not discbarge tbe new men,
and an outbreak is imminent.

Eufatjla, (I. T.) Feb. 6. Belle
Starr the female terror ot the Terri
tory, but better known as Belle
Boyd, the Confederate Spy, was
killed last Sunday evening at 6
o'cloc at Taylor's farm, seven
miles northeast of Brook. Having
eaten supper with Jack Rose, an
Indian, she left on horseback and
alone for home, a mile aud a ha 1
distant. She was never again seen
alive.
The South Canadian river was to
have been crossed by her and tbe
terry man at tbe river was waiting
fr her. Just at twilight a riderless
norae came dashing toward tbe
river and tbe ferryman knew the
horse was the property of the
notorious Belle Starr,
he retraced tbe horse's track for a
half mile where he found her dead
body in the mud. A load of buck
shot had been emptied into ber
breast, w hile a load of tine shot had
struck her in tbe head.
Sbe evidently had been assassin
ated, lor ber pis'ol had not been
drawn trom its belt. She would
have doue dangerous work bad sbe
been buidiy faced. She left a dar-

husband.
Her husband, James Starr wbo
as summoned by telegraph from
this city announced before leaving
that be would kill tbe man who
shot his wife,no matter who he was.
Notwithstanding tbe criminal
notoriety of tbe women she left
many friends, wbo are determined
to avenge her death.
Belle Bojd was born in Martins
burg, now in Wc;t Virginia, in
1840, and lived there in 1861. Her
father was a merchant and her
mother a handsome women of a
good family. The girl's associ
ations and education were excel
lent. During her visit to a neigh
boring town of Winchester she bad
been declared a dabbing jouog
horseman.

that time she was "attached" to
Stonewall's brigade with more or

quite as much of a favorite with

and with some Congressmen as she

success. She abandoned the stage

lessor." For some years she has lived in
the Choctaw nation and has figured
in the United States Court ne;e on
several occasions, and was once
sent to the penitentiary for selling
whiskey in tbe Choctaw nation.
Dressed in men's clothes, riding
in a good saddle, armed with a
brace of formidable pistols, sbe has
raided, caroused and participated
in every form of outlawry preval
ent in the nation.
Sbe rode at a pace and with a
grace that knew no equal, snot
with gieat skill, and, with it all.sbe
was a welt educated and accom-
p isbed woman. Many citizens in
Port Smith have heard ber play on
the piano. She has one daughter
named Pearl Younger, a beautiful

Mrs. John L. 8ullivan, tbe legal
wife of the prizefighter, after lis

ins. when Mrs.Sullivan was present
and Captain How land exhorted.
It bas been wbirpered in Arctic
that the ceuple had more in com
mon than mere religious interests.
Mrs. Sullivan manages a boarding
house there, and rumors say the
Captain has been very deligent in
visiting at the boose. Last Sun
day the presence of Mrs. Sullivan
at tbe meeting created a sensation,
and tlre was an exciting sceno
w hen Mary McLane, an old sweet
heart of the captain, arose and de
nounced bim in strong language
The meeting was 6plit up, one
halt led by Captain Howland, with
John L's wife in tbe wake, going
to one end of. tbe room, while the
other, led by Deacon, occupied tbe
other.
After the meeting it was an
nounced that Mrs. Sullivan, aeon,
vert wou'd appear on the platform
in the evenug nd exhort. This
aroused the ent my, and a body of
men and women seized a rail and
started on the highway toward Mrs.
Sullivan's house, where tbe captain
was at the time. It is not known
whether their plan was to utilize
the rail as a battering ram upon
Mrs. Sullivan's front door or
whether it was for the purpose of
riding tbe eloquent captain out of
town.
The attacking party halted near
the 31-tiiidit church, where g;od

Sabbath and to seek for less vigor

the captain.
Owing to-days disturbance there
was no evening meeting, and tbe
curious villagers did not enjoy the
