Eugene, Feb. 9. - J. J. Bellvail
a respected citizens of Eugene has
unaccountably disappeared from
his home in this cUt. He left
borne in the evening for the pur
pore, as be said, of getting som?
tobacco. Not returning bis family
became alarmed, and search was
instituted, which resulted in show
ing that he had leit his family
His clothing and personal effects
were gone, but a check tor $400 in
favor ot his wife was found in a
drawer. He had recently sold bis
city property for $1600, and on the
day of bis disappearance settled
with the patties he had been
owing. His family relatiots are
said to have been pleasant, and no
reason cac be given for bis actions
in thus leaving home. He was
wen at the depot at Albany yester
day.
Air. S. P. Lowell has made ar
ran"enient to build ice works in
Eugene, haviDg a capacity of two
tons per day. He will use steam
power, and expects to have every

was admitted into the Uniou, one
of the jnoviions was that the state
should receive five per cent, of the
proceeds of all sales af U. S. bonds
within her borders, so yesterday
Governor Pennoyer received a di
patch from Hugh S. Thompson
acting secretary of the U. S. treas
ury, announciog that a draft had
been forwarded for the amount to
the credit of the state on that uc
count for the past year, which is
something in the neighborhood ol

Corvallis the last year is home on
a visit to her parents and other

Miss Libbie Ambler returned to
her school after enjoying a three
weeks vacation among her friends.
Miss May Hardy is visiting her
grandparents at Waterloo.
The Labanon Btaye on its last
trip to Sweet Home broke down
and the horees were both badly
frightened but were kept under
control by the driver.

At the last meeting of the city
council the question of building a
$5000 school house was brought
up. Some of the taxpayers are
opposed to the expenditure at the
present time.
The removal of the cemetery was

resides here.

Now is the time to think over
what vegetables are best to sow
and plant the coming year: and
having so decided get from good
reliable sources the seeds likely to
be required. A model garden
should have an asparagus and rhu
barb patch, .harly in the spring
have, first, radishes and lettuce,
and green onions, one of the very
earliest products, and much iike&l
bv everybody. Young beeta. peas
and beans, both b rench and Lima,
should not be forgotten. Early
and late cabbage, with a few dozen
of cauliflower, are good changes in
this line. Tomatoes, egg-plants
and peppers will require a hot-bed
to bring forward. Only a few
plants are, however, required, and,
if not crown, can be purchased.
For celery, a pinch of seed sown in
tpru will give all the plants re
quired. A piece of land should be
selected, rather sandy, if possible,
for the melon patch, a few hill of
cucumbers, and half-a-dozen of the
Bquash family. These, with a 6pot
still more sacred by itself for the
pot-herbs, to flavor the soups and
other dishes, would make a tolera
bly good supply for an ordinary
family. For the present season
Messrs. Wallace, Thompson & Co.

especially for this climate, and em
brace everything desired by gard
