FOR VICE-PRESIDENT, LEVI P . MORTON OF NEW YORK. FOR PRF.SIDKXTIAL ELECTORS, ROBERT m'LEAN, W.M. KARL'S C. W. FL'LTON. WHERE TO NEXT. Horace Greeley's advice to "go west" has already become a mis nomer, as the west of his day has become the centre of to-day, and the far west that ends with our Pacific Coast is fast resolving itself into the heart of the country. Soon ) every available locality will be fully occupied, and the human family metaphorically speaking will sit down like Alexander and weep for new worlds to conquer. Already speculations are being made as to where fresh pastures can be found, and many are begin ning to suggest that the dark continent of Africa may be the future locality to take the place of the "west." The civilization of that country istheaccDmplishment to be worked before such an end can be attained, and the principal factor in that civilization is the total suppression of the slave trade. This must be accomplished to make the change from barbarism to civilization. The real difficulty is in regard to the manner in which the change shall be accomplished. Africa, claimed by everybody, really be longs to nobody. So far as the Nyassa region is concerned, the to the south and west, have never set foot in it ; and while the Ger mans claim the north and east, their pretensions have been based neither upon right of discover-, purchase, conquest, treaty nor j possession, but upon the audacity 'of a map-maker, who, with his paint-brush, colored some tens of thousands of square miles beyond the territory recognized as German by the London convention of 18G. Only a few days ago Portugal publicly maintained her right not only the coasts of Sofala and Mozambique, but also to the Nyassa region ; and it is evident that if there shall be any obstruction to internal development, and to the efforts toward checking the slave trade it will come from that power. All travelers in Africa are agreed in sajing that the claims which the Portuguese have put forward to sovereignty over certain African territory are monstrous and absurd the very name of their country being unknown in these regions. The Portuguese have, it must be admitted, an old connection with Africa. They were the first by their voyages to enrich geography with a knowledge of the African coasts ; and as early as 1497 they took possession of the eastern ehore by founding the colon- of Mozambique. Whether in or about the year 1(323 a Portuguese traveler did or did not catch a glimpse of Lake Nyassa is doubtful ; but it is at least certain that since that time no Portuguese official, mis sionary, or trader has come near that region. . The proposition oi Cardinal Lavigerie, which lias been indorsed by the Pope, is to insure sinii concerted action on the part of European powers that a crusade could be instituted against the Arab slave-traders who aie now depopulating Africa. France has expressed her willingness to take measures toward suppressing the slave trade which is nuw being carried on between Pemba and -Madagascar under the protection of the French flag. The African Lakes Company is making a determined stand against the Arab traders in the region made famous by the discoveries of Livingstone, and if German' and Great Britain shall carry out their recent under standing and blockade the coast leading to the vast districts now infested by the Arabs a great check will have been put on the existing traffic. Nyassaland ought by all right to be considered as belonging to England. Germany's sphere of influence, owing to the concessions which have been made to her by the Sultan of Zanzibar, is of great extent and important not only geographically but also in regard to its commercial prospects. If Germany, therefore, should waive the question of her own inland interests and co-operate with Great Britain, the Zambesi, that great naturnal highway, could be opened up, and a pacific and civilizing influence would begin to spread throughout the whole country. If the importation of free wool and free broom corn into this coun try will be a benefit to the farmers who produce them, why will not the importation of sugar and rice also be a benefit to the planters of Louisana and South Carolina who produce them. Pertinent questions of this kind should be considered upon their merits and not from political points of view. It matters very little, as far as the se' tlement of the tariff issues are concerned, whether General Harrison is elected president orthe choice of the people falls to Mr. Cleveland, but it matters a great deal to the country whether the policy of the government, that has placed the country in its present prosperous condition, shall be changed, and a new course of action adopted, as must inevitably be done i: President Cleveland is re-elected.
