The force of r explosion of petroleum yesterdaj on board the steamer, I. A. (Mollis, from Philadelphia, ire oir the deck and partly carried away the Bids, but only the forward portion sank. A fire is raging fiercely in the portion above the water. The other ships lying in the vicinity are much damaged by the explosion. It is feared that the loss of life is great. Portions of a dozen dead bodies have been found lying on the quay. Arms, legs and hands are scattered about in shocking confusion. farmers is distress. Failure of Crops In Dakota Resnlts In Want and Starvation. Minneapolis, Oct. 17. M. J. Harpman of this city, who has been investigating the condition of the farmers in Ramsey county, Dakota, who were reported to be starving to death, returned last night. He says that seventy fam ilies are absolutely destitute of food and fuel, and something muBt be done immediately. The condi tion of the people is beyond des cription, men, women and children are in rags and have not a cent of money in the world. Their crops were totally destroyed by frost in August, and their land, stock and Arming implements are roort-g-'-ged. Absolutely distress pr vails everywhere. The secretary ot the Commercial Traveler s Club has issued a cir- ular to the effect that the com tnercial travelers have arranged to hsscuible ;n mass convention at ndiananolis on the 20 inst. in the interest of nrotectiou to American industries. The indications are that it will be the largest meeting of the kind ever held in this country, the circular claiming that every article produced and manu factured in the Lulled States wih ie represented. Responses have been received rrom Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland and other cities, showing that the greatest interest is being taken in the matter, and that all traveling men, inesp :tive ot party affilia tions are arranging to spend that day in Indanapolis, which is to be known as "Drummers Day. The programme is to meet in cod vention and organize resolutions, which they will pay their resuects to General Harrison. A FATAL WALTZ; Mrs. Mary Neumann, a Bride, Drops Dead at a Dance. San Francisco, October 17 The dance given at Saratoga Hall last night by one of the local Ger man societies met with an interru ption that dampened the ardor of festivities. vV hue engaged in a waltz about 9 o'clock, Mrs. Mary Neumann, a bride of but one day, dropped to the floor and expired instantly from heart disease. She was picked up and carried to an adjoiuing room, and soon after the body was taken in charge by un dertakers, who conveyed it to their rooms. Mrs. Neumann, who was married Saturday, was 2S years old. She lived near the corner ot Coole and Carlo streets, and had been subject to heart disease for years past. A POLITICAL Ml'KIr Assassination of a Colored Repub"" eau Candidate. Hempstead, (Tex.,) October 17. Lewis McDade (colored), Re jbiicau candidate for Cotton weigher, was shot and killed from -n ambush last night. No parti- c alars of the assassination can be obtained. The Pestiferous Fly. Mr. Minto says he has seen in the press the fly that annoys the Stock is supposed to have come by me Soutbern Pacific railroad. This is not what has been intima ted in the Oregonian, for it has alluded to it as brought here from Eastern Oregon, and brought here i ;om the other side of the Rocky mountains. Mr. Minto told the story of his sheep before several who understood that this small fly attacked them causing sores that were then infested by the blow fly, and they died from the combined effect. The conversation was con cerning this fly and he gave his experience- as in connection with them. It may be that this fly has 'had a favorable season this year and done uncommon harm. It has been a rather warmer summer than common, but a lady from Kansas says they enter the house there in very warm weather. How to guar J stock against them will be an important qiv tion if they con tinue to grow worse, as they have done of late. Any one who can give some way of prevention that can be made available for common use will confer a favor that the public who are interested will ap preciate. To say nothing of the actual losses the distress tbey cauc: animals appeals to the best feelii j of humanity. Those who own good stock do not like to know it suffers in such a way. Mr. Fred Anderson is stili very low with the fever. Mr. John Seuger, our baker, has just returned from a short visit to Tacoina on business. Mr. James S'.mons is building quite a fine house here, and will soon have it ready to move into. Quite a number of our people have gone to the Mechanics' fair at Portland. Mrs. Ida Fust and family, from Heppner,are spending a few days visiting her- numerous relatives here. Messrs. Waters & Morlock are shipping oti lot? of flour the past two weeks, both by wagon and railway. Several hands have been laid off from the woolen mills here the past ten days, as business is get ting dull. This fall the merchants are get ting in lots ot goods, and notwith standing it is election year busi ness is good. Mr. John Moore has purchased William A. Cox's ; house here and moved into it from his farm up near Harrisburg. Dr. W. H. Rowland, a former resident of his place but now hailing from Ogden, Utah, is here vifcitiug relatives and friends. Messrs. Curl and Persiful have just returned frm a four days' hunt and got one deer. They rr port game very scarce. Miss Hattie Long, teacher of the primary department of the North Brownsville school, is . sick with fever, so there will probably be no school this week. The great topic of interest here the past week has been the news o the marriage in Prineville lately of Miss Carrie Bowles and AlbeiJ Masterson, both formerly of this place. On the 18th we will have a politi cal discussion here by Messrs. McLean and Shipworth, and as we have had no political speaking here yet, we took for a large attendant . Mr. Wm. Stevenson was hurt by a stick of heavy timber striking him while at work with the biid builders on the narrow gauge road, making the third man injured since work commenced. Severarsfrangef? have moved in to our town of Tate, and one family that of Mr. T. W. Swearingen, a cousin of Mr. N. B. Standisu, have come from Kansas to cast their lot with ui, and report several families to follow. Mr. W. R. Kirk bought M". Joseph White's hops the past week aiao a small lot from the Kings Bros., above here, paying tbcin something over 2700, or at the rate of IS cents per pound. The Tempietou Bros, have not sold their crops yet,and are busy baling. They have a big lot of prime hoj.j on hand. The trains od the narrow gauge road aie getting in later every week, and if this state of affairs, keeps on it is only a question of time, and Lot very long one either, when it will be daylight before they arrive here from Portland,and lhe complaints concerning our mail matter are not only loud but deep. There is already serious talk of getting our mails to come via Halsey, as of old, so we could get letters the same day they left Portland, instead of having to wait till the second day, as we do now. There is one feature about Mor moaism in Salt Lake that might furnish food for ethnological study. Every Mormon saloon has a ''family entrance," which has more woman natrons in thi ennrca of a w:2k than any one of the ward meetings on Sunday. At times it 6-;ms as though there was a steady stream of women and girla going in there for their daily gin and revelation. Sometimes a woman hesitates about going inside, so the barkeeper kindly brings out to her whatever she may want. The amount of liquor carted off home from these resorts of Holiness to the Lord is astonishing, , and all that Anestles Grant and TWi- r wj IVl can do does not seem to lessen tl e evil.
