A.n ac nouncement that the senate had passed an adjournment , resolution was made to the house at 1 o'clock, and was greeted with applause by the handful of members present. SECOND BULLETIN. Senator Allison says that he wi'l to-day offera resolution for adjourn m -nt on Satuday as a substitute for his recess resolution of yesterday. THIRD BULLETIN. In the senate to-day Senator Brown offered a resolution for the final adjournment on Saturday as a substitution for Allison's recess resolution, and it was adopted. The house has concurred in the senate adjournment resolution, and congress will adjourn on Saturday next, Oct. 20. The piesent session of congress has dragged its weary length over a period unprecedented in the his tory of the country, and it will be a relief to know that the final ad journment is to occur with the close of the present week. The legislation accomplished by the session has been important, but the extreme length of the session has been so tedious that frequently no quorum has been present in the house during the past few weeks. William Masters, the well known pioneer of Portland very recently returned from a trip East. Mr. Masters came by the way of the Canadian Pacific and in speak ing to a reporter of his trip said : "On my return to Oregon it so happened I was contiguous (in the sleeping car) to three English caj italists who had been extensive lumbermen in Canada. They being the owners of vast tracts oi timber land on the Gulf of Georgia and Eraser river in British Colum bia, were "xing to that country to erect vast lumber mills. These facts 1 learned from them, and when informed Hived in Portland, Oregon, and had been on the Pa citic coast for thirty-six years, they became quite communicative. ''They said their mills would hive a" capacity to cut 2,000,000 feet in twenty-four hours. I then inquired wlieie they exj ected lo rind markets for the lumber out put. The reply was, in California, Oregon and Washington territory. "1 replied that Oregon and Washington have vast forests oi tine timber; perhaps as fine and easily marketed as yours, and you will have a tariff to pay on your lumber. This will make it difficult to comiete with our lumbermen. "In reply to this, the English man said, the tariff will soon be taken off lumter, and the states are about to exclude Chinamen. We admit them. They will crowd our country. We will put them into our forests, get our logs cut very cheap, our lumber handled, our ships freighted at little cost by Chinamen. And we will sell our lumber in your markets at such prices that your lumbermen can not compete arith us and pay American wages. And then added, you can see that in a short time we will supply all your mar kets with lumber at lower prices than your lumbermen can possibly furnish it. The difference in the spirit of the two parties is S'nguiarly apparent iu this campaign. The republicans have ..refrained from telling ugly truths a- nit Grover Cleveland. The democrats are publishing the meanest slanders of General Har rison. Denver Times (Rep.) Secretary Endicott left Mas sachusetts with something of a reputation as a man and a reformer but the o'-der he required General Benet to issue in regard to women and children in the Government armories destroys what little repu tation he had left at ter the repeated blunders of his administration. Philadelphia Press (Rep.) Harper's Weekly is unhappy. It declares that the "assessments levied bv democratic committees are no more voluntary coutribu tions than a purse handed to a footpad is a free gilt." W ith regard to Superintendent Jackson's re moval, it is one "which the good t-ense of the country unqualifiedly condemns." Pittsburg Dispatch (Rep.) A Washington dispatch in yes terday's Journal stated that Gov ernor Gray had informed President Cleveland that there was no use expecting that Indiana would give a democratic .majority ; that the stat 3 was almost certain to go re publican, and he assigned as n sons the attitude of the demo cratic party on the tarifl' question and state pride, which decires to see one of its honored citizens the nation's Chief Magistrate. The first crumb of comfort tlaat has been vouchsafed to Indiana republicans for many a day is now being enjoyed with great relish. Dr. Leonard, the greenback candi late for governor in JSS4, has declared himself for Harrison and Morton, and says that 85 per cent of his supporters, who then num bered 8820, will go with him. The In man Line steamer City of New York arrived .from Liverpool this morning. Her passage was made in six days and twelve hours, be ing the best third irial record in shipping annals. It is thought that the big steamer will later get over the ocean in a little over five days, and thus carry out the promises of her builders. EHPEKOK WILLIAM AT NAPLES. Interestini Relics I nearth d In His Presence at Pompey. Naples, ct. 18. Emperor Wil liam went to Pomjey this morn ing. The emperor was intensely interested in everything to be seen at Pompey, especially in the ex cavation made in his presence, during the progress of which sev eral valuable bronze objects were unearthed. These were presented to the emperor as souvenirs of his visit. The emperor and King Humbert returned to Naples at noon and immediately departed for Rome. MacKeuzie's Objectionable Book. Berlin, Oct. IS. Prof. Vieckow and Dr. Waldeyer have signed a document declaring that the prc tocal drawn up after the post mortem examination of Emperor Frederick did not mention an abcess in the cavity of the trachea and that none existed. They further say that the tissues in which Dr. Beman made the first passage in attempting to insert the conula were at a normal con dition and not cicatrized.
