To-day was payday with the em ployes of James McFadden, who is buildmir a railroprf fir? the LeLiirh Valley " Co. He :nploj's 400 laborers. This morning Alexander McCur. paymaster, accompanied by a young Irishman, left Pitts burg with $30,000 to go to the works to pay off tne men. On the way to the works they had to pass through a lonely strip of woods, and without warning both were shot from an ambush and killed. Three Italians are suspected of the murder. Thejentire $30,000 was taken. There is great excitement and a posse of 150 men are looking for the murderers. AXOIIIKK RAILWAY IlOBItOK. A Cannon Ball Express Train Wreck ed with Fatal Kc.su I Is. Pittsburg, Oct. 1!).- It is report ed that tiie Cincinnati express, on the Baltimore and Ohio road, was wrecked near "Washington, Penn., this morning. Three persons are reported killed and a large number injured. Another dispatch says that a cannon ball express on the Baltimore & Ohio, which left Cin cinnati last night, tan into an open switch near Washington, Penn., depot this morning. The train was precipitated over a trestle, a distance of ten feet. The train was running at a high rate of speed,and was almost a complete wreck. Two persons were instantly killed and ahout twenty injured. A num ber of them will die. EHI'KKOK WILLIAM. Mo.-c About His Visit in Italy-Uraud Military Maneuvers. Rome, Oct. 10. Emperor "Wil liam visited the parade grounds liis morning and witnessed the maneuvers of the battaehe of bersoglese at Boquet, given 'last nivrht in honor oi the emperor. General Pelloux, commander oi the Alpine division of the Italian army, made a speech in which he said the watchword of that division was "No passage this way." lie expressed a hope that the frontier wotild not be attacked, but said if it should be, the Italian troops would defend it unfliiiciiingly. w amiim; tox x ews. Sargison, lor publishing a letter which asked some rather pointed questions on thedefalca tions of the absconded City Treas urer. It is understood that the city auditors have discovered that the absconding Treasurer ab9trac ted over $2000this year from the city funds. He took this amount since the audit was instituted. Quite an etiort is making to bring in velvet flowers amoug win ter trimmings. They are at once clumsy, unnatural, and wofuliy out of taste. Veloutina is the fashion for the newest bric-a brae, it being new ware with velvety white surface overlaid with rich-hued flowers. It will be a satisfaction to sll peace and order lovi::g people to read from the Portland JNews the following item, suggestive of the time when dogs cannot b,te with impunity. On the loth day oi last August Edward Dunn was bitten by a dog by a dog belonging to William Plunder, the well-known duggist. On September 19th Dunn began an actin against Plunder for $1C30 damages' and costs and disbursements. Yester day morning the case came up for trial before a jury in department No. 1, state circuit court. Dunn testified that on the morning of the loth of August he went to get Dr. Wheeler, whose office is over1 Plunder's store to attend to his sick wife ; that while on the stairs he was met by Pfunder's Siberian bloodhound, and was severely bit ten by that animal. Other wit nesses corroborated his testimony. For the defense a number of peo ple swore to the docility of the dog. Shortly before noon the case went to the jury, which returned a ver dict of $400 and costs against the defendant. T enty-one prisoners escaped from the county jail before day light this morning." 1 hey overpowered, bound and gagged Jailer A. M. Rowe. whose cries were afterwards heard. They took the ke'es to the outside door and escaped, locking the lailer' inside, lhe prisoners broke out of the cage by breaking an iron bar. None have yet been captured, but every effort is being made. Seven of the prisoners were in cuffs, which were not broken, and a like number who could have escaped decided not to go. The jail was in a crowded condition. Among those who escaped were George Miller, the murderer of Hall and Johnsonwho robbed Ex Gov. Connor's house. l K m.t KXMv!. The Washington correspondent of the Sun reports an jnterview with Secretary Whitney regarding tbe competency of the American navj with interesting statments regarc ing Canada's military strength,the fisheri question, etc. Regarding the probable resu!t of an armed conflict between England and the United States over the fisherie and the Secretary said England would not go to war on the sul -j 'Ot. She has already once su'- -st .ntiaily conceded the correctuc ;a of our point of view, and he fur ther ssid the final result of any war would be the annexation of ('mi; da to the United States. Britiih naval supremacy nd the geographical characteristics of t"je coasts of Greut Britain pieclude any idea of invasion and conquest :y"the United States. The trans atlantic transpoitation of military forces would be limited to British rcenforcements of the garrisons in her American colonies: Hostile operations on the offen sive would be cavried on by the navy exclusively, and she would be confin J to attempts to occupy harbors and ports which might be compelled to pay contribution and to a blockade of the coasts. Attempts to capture the United Staic3 seaports or to blockade her co;ist, cannot be successful except to a limited ext at on the firsc ou -break of hostilities. Concerning a naval conflict, Greut Britain could make no con quest of territory by her navy, she could land no forces. H"r .un uould 3e to get into our hai bors and destroy property. In response to the query, "Your epinion, however, is that if we should get into a war with Eng land we could make a good show for ourselves?" the Secretary said: "With the vessels in course of construction finished, we certainly could. It i3 humiliating thatve have no fighting ships but they will come in good time. We have a highly trained body of officers and men in our naval service and. we are organized perfectly. "We know from day to day where every one of their ships is and we have complete data as to their move ments. "Most of the citie3 are reached by narrow channels easily defend ed by torpedoes or mines, and shelling a city from a distance of six or eight miles is theoretically possible, but practically it is in effective. Comparatively few American ports can be entered by the largest of British armed vessels and most of those have difficult channels capable of defense. San Francisco, Puget sound, Portland, Me ., are, however capable of per fect torpedo defense . Long island sound and the Chespeake would have to be defended by naval fcrj ces." It is reported at the Brooklyn Navy Yard that the machinery of the new war vessels, the Boston, which recently left for the "VY'-t Indies, had broken down, and thai j the vessel was lying helpless at tiie Windward Islands.
