Thev will teil von t ey are not by any means the sole survivors of our one-time merchant lleet; that many, if not most, of their mates are yet living, but dis tributed over the country, living with their grandchildren, perhaps wherrying for a living or engaged in other employments along a water front. From this it would appear that a sound human body can withstand hunger and expos ure and even frequent excitement, if only there is plenty of fresh air and exercise of a vigorous kind th own in. Fine !3.r.-es for Sal. We have just brought from eastern Oregon a fine lot of work horses which we will sell on terms to suit the times. Among them is some promising young drivers from Oneco, Mason Chief, and .Edward Everett. Also some choice heavv . . i - i mares, -invone wisning a norse Tin? BKU-IAST DUKAHLE, EXCI TE MEN T AND LIFE. LOSU The claim that excitement, or a position that is subject to exciting scenes tends to shorten life, which has been often made and pretty gen erally accepted, is being discredited by facts that seem to upset the theory. The Scientific American says that they who have studied attention to go to the next street to It is seldom that more thorough, practical common sense is as em phatically and fearlessly told, as it is in the following extract from the Farmer's Friend : "We have some knowledge of pjlitics. Candidates are not tools. 'They know on which side their bread is buttered.' The influence of the bar-rooms count more than the churches in a close canvass. The liquor seller is loquacious and 'lectionering' day in and day out, for his friend. The deacons, t towards, elders and vestrymen do nothing to help for ward a candidate from the church, not even taxing- their time and will do well to look them over ami we will t ike pleasure in showing them to all intending purchasers. McKnight Bros., Tallman, Or. , ECONOMIC a: 4 .rs in i.thers -th. v THE STATE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE, t ORVAI.IJS, OREGON. man s earthiv tenure and the ! causes which tend to lengthen or curtail it will have scarcely failed to notice bow contradictory is the evidence of those we naturally look to to explain them, and that their evidence, even when they agree, does not always accord with wtjat would seem to be the facts, as they appear around us. One authority says general physical development is necessary to pro long life, while another insists this is not required if the day's employ ment does not call for physical exertion. Dr. D. B Richardson, an eminent English authority, de clares among many obvious, though scarcely novel propositions, that everything that quickens the action of the heart, any kind of excite ment, taxes and reduces the stor age of life. If this were said of those naturally feeble, or inheriting disease, or even of those leading sedentary lives, and living from day to day without the invigorating benefits of Jresh air and exercise, it .would seem reasonable, for one does not have to be a skillfui phys iologist to know that excitement affects the nerves as well as the heart. But is the statement strict ly true, when referring, as here, to the entire human family? SurJy soldiers in actual warfare and hL ors in peace as well as war live; among excitements, besides being notoriously addicted to indulgences as to drinking and smoking, yet they are long-lived. Statistics show it and observations corrobo laem. The pension list of the British army, giving the ages of the beneficiaries, men who hyve served i n all climates for from twenty to forty years, and excluding tho.-e pensioned sooner because of ''wounds received while in the performance of duty," show that soldiers do not die as other men do ; so it is with the naval pensioners of the Greenwich Hospital, now scattered over Great Britain, bi cause of its abolishment. In the merchant service to-day it is no uncommon thing to find a man l vote. Ana yet these proper people set up a whine that the fellows of ow degree run our government Why should not a candidate cort and consort with the the class that work for him? Politics is a matter of fact and a practical affair. It is not R'sthetie. Let the men of godly lives and convictions take of! their coats and carry out their con victionsor hush. The 'primary' settles the question of candidates. The saloon and the hoodlum are on hand. The class-leader and church warden are at home smoking their evening cigar." Tcrfii Commences on M!:s'sI.-i.. The objectors in congress are making for themselves men vi able records, Kilgore has placed himself on record as being the ol.f shvlein the way of the pension for Mrs. Gen. P. II. Sheridan, and now comes Berry in the senate and hinders the voting to Mrs. Waite the salary that the Chief Justice would have drawn if he had lived the year out.
