In view of the riot-us demonstration yester day, Mayor Koche this morning issued a proclamation calling on the people of the city not to con gregate, on the streets. Some cars were run on the north side this morning. The tracks were torn up in a number of plates and obstruc tions placed at many points, mak- mtr the irorress slow. It is rumored that a conference is in progress looking to a settlement. President Yorkes denies this and declares that the ligbt is to the death. It is announced that an attempt will be made to run cars on the west side at 4 o'clock this afternoon and serious trouble is nu ticipated, notwithstanding a full committee of strikers called on Captain Aldrich this morning and proffered assistance in suppressing anv disturbance. 1IOK1IONS l ji :xu o. HeiMV Erving, representative here of the Mormon colonies in the j-tate of Chihuahua, denies the re port that the Mormon church has bought 400,000 acres of land in that state, formerly the property oi the Zaui Indians. He also de nies the charge that the Mormons contemplate moving en mase to this country. The Mormons now number only L) families, occupy ing 200,000 acres in Chihuahua. There is much discussion in the press regarding Mormon immigra tion, the general sentiment being averse to it. .(ai-lliii I!M'vcry. The house has passed a bilFintroouced by Hermann to confirm to jrtaitiri Howe, of Oregon, the title to a homestead in section 22, township 12 south, range 23 east of the Wil lamette meridian, in The Dalles land district. It seems that the entry had been originally made to Marsjial McNeil in February, 1S75. He lived on the land and inipioved it for the regular period of fivp years, but before he could make final proof he died. The adminis trator appointed by the couMvl court of Grant county, Oregon, sold the homestead at public auction, but the interior department re fused to issue a patent, on the ground that there is no authority. under the law allowing an admin istrator to make proof on a home stead entry as such. The bill passed by the house is to remedy the difficulty by ordering the issue of a patent to Howe, who pur chased the bomestead from the ad ministrator at public auction. An Important Association. An interesting meeting of the North Pacific fruit growers associa tion was held in Portland Tuesday. There was a large attendance ot the most prominent fruit growers ol the state, and their discussion of subjects concerning the fruit in dustry were very interesting. Ore gon is developing into a great fruit producing country, and it is to pro tect and encourage this industry that this association has been lormed. I he members will en deavor to have the association made a state institution, witn a view of securing legislation to aid in checking the ravages of fruit posts. Tne. e pests are a gr.at menace to ttie fruit growing indus try, and unless effective lemedies can be found the industry cannot prosper. This )uestion is not only interesting the fruit growers of Or egon, but of California aLo, and in that state the question is the prin cipal subject of discussion at the meetings of all Irnit-growers' t-ssociations. Much good has been accomplished, but there seems to be no end to the work. At each meeting the appearance of some new destructive insect is reported, and a series of experiments must be conv.r.enccd to 2nd a means to exterminate the pest. The Oregon stale legisla:ure should render the North Pacific association the aid it asks. Jin appropriation for such a purpose will greatly assist the association. iii iruit industry is one of too much importance to be neglected, and the growers recog nize the fact that the3' are threat ened by the appearance of these pests. The association took a step in the right directio l by appointing a committee to collect samples oil green, dried and canned fruit to be sent East for exhibition. This is an excellent method ;' attracting the attention of Eastern people toward Oregon, and the result will be a flow of immigration as soon as our resources arc known and appreciate i.
