Cross.who had been arrested at that place and tried before Justice Ellison and held in .fSOO bonds for burglarizing the house of James Mooney,a bach elor living near that place. He had carried away a quantity of clothing and articles of value, considerable of which was found upon his person. lie was lodged in jail last night to await the action of the grand mry. As there seems to be no mistake as to his being tiie right man he may be said to be fairly en route to the penitentiary. U. will serve dinner ail day on Monday, circus day, charging 25 cents. Ice cream wid also be served, and charged for extra. Louis Mayer, who recently pur chased a bakery at Arlington, has returned to this city, having sold the same back to the original owner Mr. Sheuerman. James Elkins and family, who have been spending the summer in Crook county, will start for Albany about Sept. 1st to place their chil dren in school and remain until spring. Chas. D. Smith, who assaulted a Chinaman at Silverton a few days ago, has been released on $300 bonds. The Chinaman, who was at first reported killed, is recover iug. The water tank, windmill,engine house and pump used in filling the water tank for the Oregonian rail way at Dallas burned a night or tw ago. The cause of the fire is unknown. The Roman hippo drome, which forms but a quota of their attractions, will revive in the memories of the visitors the tradi tions of the turf and gladitorial sports of the golden days of Uomc, and will present thrilling and real istic duplications of the exciting pastime of that classic period. The fresh faces of many equestri ans equestrians and gymnasts who have won renown at home and abroad will be seen in the circus rings, and numberless prominent new acts that are astounding will be presented. Those animals in the zoological department which fiom being annually exhibited lor a number of years are no longer attractive have been disposed of at public sale, and have been re placed by new and rare accessions. The pair of gigantic living hippo potami, the only pair exhibited in the world, outside of one or two zoological gardens in Europe, have been retained. A tie show will ex hibit in Albany, Monday, Aug. 27. Orrgan Mason Koari Bill. The house committee on public lands will take up the Oregon wagon road bills next Monday, provided a quorum of the commit tee be present. There are two bills before the committee, one sent to congress by ihe president, which forfeits outright three of the wagon road grants in this state. The other is a bill by Dolph, which has already passed the senate. It pro vides that the whole matter be re ferred to a court, which shall in vestigate it thoroughly, and that the court shall have power to for feit the grants if it Muds that tne conditions upon which they are made have not been fu'.filled. It shall have power also to confirm tiie grants, if it finds that the con ditions upon which they were made have been fulfilled. The chairman of the committee, Hol man, of Indiana, is in favor of the president's bill and is working hard to secure its adoption. Grain circles have been consider ably excited in San Francisco dur the past few days, and there was a perceptible advance in wheat. In this city wheat has advanced to 07 cents. Tbe market has a firm tone, brought about by advices from Liverpool of heavy purchases there, owing to the shortage of crops in England and in Fiance. A commercial traveler who was in Salem yesterday informed a re porter that while at Eugene City a few days ago he and several other "knights of the gripsack" made up a complete list of the commercial travelers, who make periodical trips through the valley. They counted 113 of them and out of this number 104 were republicans, nine democrats and nary a prohi or mugwump in the lot. Salem Statesman. Kuuiaently Cerifct. Albany is taking time by the forelock and protecting herself against fire. Last Thursday thev tested their new. steamer and i't worked like a charm. It will be accepted by the council. They hare now one hand engine and two steamers, besides one of the best water works systems in the state. Corvallis Times. This is newspapers now, and Mr Gradwohl certainly offers sound advice to farmers when he says that for the same reason a business man will not place wheat in the warehouse without insuring it, farmers cannot afford to store wheat without having it insured. It costs but a trifle and may save a whole crop. The truth of this will be seen when on every hand we hear of wheat being burned, the loss invariably falling upon the farmers, as business men always insure theirs.
