they have this vear determined to
lead the pack, and have devoted
the ent;re winter vacation to vastly
augmenting and adding to the at
tractive features of their already
formidable show and to disposing
by auction oft all worn out, dis
carded and no longer serviceable
material and replacing the same
with spic-span new paraphernalia
and with never-beiore presented
specialties. The Roman hippo
drome, which forms but a quota of
their attractions, will revive in the
memories of the visitors the tradi
tions of the turf and gladitorial
sports of the golden days of Uomc,
and will present thrilling and real
istic duplications of the exciting
pastime of that classic period.
The fresh faces of many equestri
ans equestrians and gymnasts
who have won renown at home and
abroad will be seen in the circus
rings, and numberless prominent
new acts that are astounding will
be presented. Those animals in
the zoological department which
fiom being annually exhibited lor
a number of years are no longer
attractive have been disposed of at
public sale, and have been re
placed by new and rare accessions.
The pair of gigantic living hippo
potami, the only pair exhibited in
the world, outside of one or two
zoological gardens in Europe, have
been retained. A tie show will ex
hibit in Albany, Monday, Aug. 27.

The house committee on public
lands will take up the Oregon
wagon road bills next Monday,
provided a quorum of the commit
tee be present. There are two bills
before the committee, one sent to
congress by ihe president, which
forfeits outright three of the wagon
road grants in this state. The
other is a bill by Dolph, which has
already passed the senate. It pro
vides that the whole matter be re
ferred to a court, which shall in
vestigate it thoroughly, and that
the court shall have power to for
feit the grants if it Muds that tne
conditions upon which they are
made have not been fu'.filled. It
shall have power also to confirm
tiie grants, if it finds that the con
ditions upon which they were
made have been fulfilled. The
chairman of the committee, Hol
man, of Indiana, is in favor of the
president's bill and is working
hard to secure its adoption.

Grain circles have been consider

the past few days, and there was a
perceptible advance in wheat. In
this city wheat has advanced to

there, owing to the shortage of
crops in England and in Fiance.

This is
newspapers now, and Mr
Gradwohl certainly offers sound
advice to farmers when he says
that for the same reason a business
man will not place wheat in the
warehouse without insuring it,
farmers cannot afford to store
wheat without having it insured. It
costs but a trifle and may save a
whole crop. The truth of this will
be seen when on every hand we
hear of wheat being burned, the
loss invariably falling upon the
farmers, as business men always
insure theirs. Call and see Mr.
Gradwohl, and have your wheat
insured.
