FOR VICE-PRESIDENT, LEVI r. MORTON OF NEW YORK. FOR PRKSIDKNTIAL F.LKCTORS, ROBERT m'i.EAX, W.M. KATUS f. Y. Fl'I.TON. PLAIN TALK ON WOOL. Governor Charles II. Sawyer of New Hampshire, who is a manu facturer of woolen goods, seems to have thought out the wool question to a, notch above that usually reached hy the ordinary debater on the proposition. Governor Sawyer says that witt wool on the free list he would be able to buy his raw material cheaper, but that in the long run it would not be to his advantage, as in the end our workingmen would have t be paid lower wages and free wool would mean the total destruction of the wool-raising industry in this coun try. That is the proposition in a nut shell. Mr. Cleveland's tariff, as crystallized in the Mills bill, would undoubtedly reduce the price of wool to the American manufac turers, at least for a time ; for, as Mr. Wise said in December, we cannot compete with cheap labor and cheaper ranges abroad; but the result would certainly be to put wages on the European level and to ruin the wool-raising in dustry of the United states, and then where should we be? Our free-trade contemporaries lose sight of the fact that if foreign wool-growers can once obtain a monopoly of the American market they wili recoup themselves very speedily for the duties which they not the consumer, but they have been compelled to pay as the premium for being allowed to com pete with the home product, and that with such a monopoly once established it would take years of a protective tariff to break it down. The problem is just this: Is it better to protect the wool-growers, the workman and the consumer, or to benefit the manufacturer, and that for a brief period ? The tariff helps the first three, free trade would benefit only the last named. Which will the people ot the United States choose? The Tacoma Ledger sizes up the late woman suffrage decision of the Washington Territory, supreme court, in the following terse lan guage: "It feqnired much lan guage to put the views of the court in shape. This decision illustrates one of the beauties of a republican form of government in a territory. The courts, not the people, makes i the laws. The people, through their fairly elected representatives, said that women might vote. The supreme court says they may not vote. The court is on top and the people submit. If athe democratic party had been honest and loyal enough to admit this territory into the union as a state the woman suffrage law made by the people would now be in force." 73T NEW JO-RAY.
