ACCOM The recent convocation of the women's congress in Washington brings into prominence the con t jmplation of the advance that has been made in the forty years of work in the condition and position of women The press comment has ben as usual sharp upon the action of the women assembled, and of course each individual comment has been marked with the spirit and under standing that actuated the writer. Very many, of course, have tipped their pencil points with the sar castic ridicule 'that has ever at tended the envenomed handling o; the"woman's rights" subject, liut with a majority the conclusion has been that vast progress has been made that changes in public sentiment h is wide ied and broad ened the field of action for women, and that legal enactments have placed her in a much better con dition. Take for instance the acts granting to women the right o hold as their separate property anything which they owned at the time of their marriage, or of wh c i they became possessed at a later date through inheritance or convey ance from other persons tiian their husbands, was the lirst step of a j series, taken with fatting deliwra tiou and caution, toward the recog nition of woman's identity as an indiyidual, without regard to family ties of blood or wedlock. At the same time a hundred calling which formerly were closed against women on account of the traditior that tli i-sex is weak and incom petent to perform the ordinary duties of bread-winners are now not only opened to them but r itively offer a welcome to those who are brave enough to enter. Tt e industrial censuses of lOi nd and the United States tell th same story of advancement. vv'oinen have attained celebritv in the pulpit, at the bar, as practi- j r 7 . ! tioners of medicine, in the fine ar -and on the press. It would be easy to fill columns with the record of their achievements in various callings to which they have shown themselves admirably adapted, and which once they could not have pursued without unsexingj date tne contract win jc let. themselves. a.-banv, April ig, isss. Many' of the most bloody wars of man fail to point to as great resides. Indeed, enough is shown to forever shame the use of the gall or sar- j cartic ridicule for the inational power of newspaper scribblers. A Fkencu writer of operatic pro- ou Jtions nas conceivea me idea of antedating all other productions in the plot add accessories of a new opera, and goes clear back to the ' Homeric "Odyssey" narratives to draw from for the foundation of! his work. It is said he will first try his hand updh the episode of j Circe. The costumes alone will ! form an attractive feature of the ' stage production of his opera. j A kecently published book' makes a comparative compilation of passages from the bible and from Shakespeare's writing, show ing their complete similarity, and d ;duces therefrom that Shakes p.are drew much of his inspiration from the scriptures. That in fact many of the "rare jewels of the sacred book are set in the fine cold of the greatest poet of all time." The pleasant feature of the re publican situation is that, despite a little needless acrimony indulged in by an Indiana, an Illinois or l Oh o editor on behalf of the " ;hosen friend" of each, there is n ' jealousy or intriguing between c mdidates or most active friends of c mdidates. If Sherman be the nominee the friends of Lincoln and Gresham. will be his friends and supporters, and without a moment's pause to salve any sore spots. In fact, these gentlemen x.i i tueir friends are loo robust to acquire sore spots by the slight Jostlings of preconvention move ments, and are too wise and good natured to strive to inflict them upon others. If Gresham be the nominee the advocates of Sherman and Lincoln and Harrison will be ome his advocates. And if it hould happen to be Allison the Gresham, Sherman and Lincoln men will "come up smiling" to do battle for him. If it should be Lincoln everybody would be a Lincoln nfen but that could not be otherwise, for Mr. Lincoln has not an enemy in the world. As for Mr. Depew, if New York should be successful in persuading the convention as to his superior availability, he would get all the republican votes in the country. And so with Harrison, or Pusk, cr Cullom, or any other whose nan e is likely to be presented. The re publican convention will assemble untinged by the bitterness of "per sonal following ;" there will be an earnest and patitnt search for the best man and, whether he be found in New York. Illinois, Ohio, Indiana or Iowa, he will be placed on a republican platform and be supported as a republican and a protectionist.
