On Tuesday Hon. Thos. E. Canthorn, treasurer of the state board of regent i of the agricultural college, received $11,250 from the treasurer of the United States, being the three payments due Ore gon out of the fund to establish experimental stations in connec tion with the several agricultural colleges ot the United States. Some time ago the officers of the board prepared and sent on the papers necessary to secure this money. We have to congratulate the people of this county and of the state that this fund has been secured to the collegt . The South ern Methodist cnurch has not been able to draw it. Now, then, there is something else to be done. The college build ing will be completed by the first of June ready to be turned over to the governor, when the state board will enter into' full control of the institution. But there is still lack ing of the fund necessarv to make the farm free of encumbrances and pay everything against it, the sum of"$2,C0t). This money must be raised. Not a single moment should elapse after the keys are delivered by the contractor before they should be delivered to the governor. In view of the litiga tion by the Southern Methodist church for this land and the con trol as soon as possible. We know that there have been unsual de mands on our people and that more are coining in the future, but that two thousand must come. The state cannot get her college until it does come. It will come. It may not be improper here to re- i mark that the thanks ot tins 1 doors cheaper than can the Port people are due the governor for his j land merchants, and the O. P. prompt' designation of the state j guarantees tnat such rates shall be board as the proper recipients ot the agricultural station fund, and for his interest in having the proper proof made before the department for securing it. Mr. Nash and Mr. Cauthorn are also to be thanked for their dispatch and good judg ment in the matter. Three thousand dollars of this money may be used for buiidiiig and improvements :or the station. We do not know how much can be , expended, nor how it will be ex pended. Lhere will doubtless be a meeting of the board to consider of these matters very soon. Benton Leader. After Pete Olsen. The country around and above Mehama has been filled, during tne past few days, with vague and alarming rumors that Pete Oiseu, the aiiucious Naoa county, Cal., murderer, upon whose head a large price is set, is hiding in that neigh borhood. A day or two since, James X. Smith ("fcrassy") and Mike Connolly were industnonsly laboring away at some ; work near the river bank, at Mehama, when they were startled to behold Mr?. ConnoiIy fly across the new Saut; utu bridge on a gallop and ap proach them with the 'appalling information that she had seen Pete sneakiDg through the brush on the 1 Linn county side. Old Gassy's cheek blanched at the app;d iug intormaiioD, but voluntarily sum moniujr Counollv to his aid audi ! swearing by the holy liokus poluis to capture the murderer dead or alive, it he lost ail his toenails in the attempt, they got their guus and started on the perilous chase Casting their eagie eyes along the Linn county shore, they belie''' Peter stealthily creeping over rocks down the river, and first map ping out their plan of campaign, thay steered across the river, a id proceeded to surround ;the op posed murderer. Gassy sneaked up on one side of him and Mike on the other, and when within a lew teet ot their prev, which was seated upon a rock, tney sudden y uiscovereu tnai it was oniv iewi Ferrell, who was taking an after noon stroll. Mike and Cassy con c uded that they wern't hunting Pete anyway, and they quietly withdrew without alarming him. Then they joined hands and swore a triple-plated oath never to di vulge their adventure to anyone ; but it was too good to keep, and Mrs. Connolly soon had the whole town agog with the news of their thrilling adventure, and they call Smith no longer "Gassy," but "Pete Olsen." ABOUT FKEHillT. The O. R.& N. Co. has recently offered our merchauts a special rate on certain classes of goods from San Francisco, which rate was a few cents lower than the reg ular rate in direct on the O. P. It. R. since its completion to this city. In making this rate the O. R.& N., not wishing to lose any money, has raised the rates on Portland shippers as shown in a schedule of rates in the Oregonian of the 19th insfc. The fact that this com pany will not agree to maintain this rate any length of time, shows con clusively that it was not given in good faith, and it would be poor policy on the part of the merchants of this city and other points in the valley to ship by any other route than the O. P. Since the coming of the O. P. our merchants have been enabled to lav freight from San Francisco down at their maintained. Our business men are already beginning to take ad va'ita.e of this fact. Three of them are already doing a whole sale business and others are con templating reaching out after a wholesale business. COAST TS.
