S.VOW SHEDS lUttSKU ON' THE X.I' The Pope Issues a Decree and iCondeams Boycotting Iowa Prohibitionists Kominate a Fall Ticket. The Herald's Spccir.l Dispatches. Minneapolis. April 27. The Northwestern Miller reports the crop condition unsatisfactory. In stead of steady improvement there had been a steady decline in the general condition of winter wheat have already appeared in Kansas: Illinois to-day makes the poorest showing for the crop of winter wheat of any state in the wheat belt, and indications are that that state will prove a failure as far as the yield is concerned, unless the present extreme conditions are mitigated. Indiana and Ohio show no improvement. Prospects in Missouri and Michigan are not flattering. A survey of tho spring wheat shows that in Minnesota and Dakota seeding is about twelve to fourteen days late, but tue con dition of the ground is thought to an offset for tha lateness ot the sea son, deeding has practically com menced this week. Reports show cereals acreage in Towa and Ne braska to be considerably below average. IOWA I'UOHIBITlO.MsTS. They Nominate a Fall Ticket and 'gPass Lcuxtny UcKoIutiou.s. Des Moines (Iowa), April 27. Laughing at funerals is such a gross violation of ihe rules of good breed ug and common decency that tbe provocation must be g"eat iJ one can he excused at all for such scandalous conduct. The wrter owns up to several irrepressible smiles and one or two wicked giggles while attending several fu nerals certain rural districts. lie offers the facts in each case in justification of his conduct. "Pre vious to 1847 our total gold production amounted to $12,000, 000, but betweeo 1847 and 1887 about $1,750,000,000 was con tributed to our stock of gold. Of ttiis, nearly three fourths came from placer deposits. Iu 1850-50 we obtained more tlian $50,0OO,00u per annum in gold from the placers ot California, and almost nothing from the gold bearing veins. Now, with an annuai production of $30, 000,000, about one half only is from placers. Our own territory has been so thorougnly explored that no considerable superficial de posits of gold are likely to be dis covered, and nearly the same thing can be said ot tbe entire world.. - "In the . northern extension of our western mountain ranges ia British Columbia and Alaska there are probably important deposits of gold. It is likely, however, to come from this region in a moder ate but perennial st.eatn, and not in a Hood. Great difficulty attends the working of those mines on ac count of the cold, long Winters and the difficulty of transporting supplies. Unless the mines should prove richer than expected there may be a dearth of gold in the near future. In the Alleghany belt of mountains, in this country, thee are large deposits of gold, but they are difficult to work. Siiii industry and perseverance may make tbem pay a profit. Mexico may be expected to turn out $1,000,000 a year, but no more, j The west coast ef South America yields littl - but silver. "Columbia, Venezuela and Brazil have, en the contrary, always been producers of gold. It is estimated that from Brazil alone more than $ 1.000,000,000 in gold was obtain ed during tine first 300 years alter the advent of the Portuguese. Columbia and Venezuela are now yielding about $4,000,000, each anaualiy, aa tittle more than that can be expected iu the future. "Australia produces about 80, 000,000 a year, and we cannot hope for more than 5,000,000 annually from Asi'i. That will cover it all. I dont fear that you and I will ever suffer from a famine of gold, but unless the North American deposits are richer than is expected some oue will suffer." O.N4 ETIIKKi: WAS. Nebraska State Journal. Ouce there lived a man of honor iu the balmy days of old, who believed that right was better than a world of shinir-g gold; through the sombre world he journeyed, doing good en every hand: widows blessed him, orphans loved him, and his fame spread throughout ; i a . t7-iji . j i i -..y ever was" his' pocket open to- the famished and distressed ; never, was he deaf to pleading, to the wailing voice of woe -but the turf is heap 'd above him, for he died long years ago. Once there was a humble brakeman, who was pleasant and polite, with the bear ing of a courtier and the graces of a knight; when he called the mimes of stations every one coulcl understand, for lie did not howi the language of some Asiatic land. He would answer all the questions that were a..kcd him on the train, all the sights that were of interest he would cheerfully explain; he would beg the trav'ler's pardon if tlie train was running slow, but his beaming face is missing, for he died long years ago. Once there wa3 a couutry lawyer in the silent vanished years, who had never in his lifetime moved the j juryman to tears; neither eloquent nor able, calmly he, from day to day, moved alorg in peace, obs curely, in the tenor ofhi.wav. i j n. never saved a villan from a fate th. t he deserved, Irom the strict est paths of duty he had ne'er two inches swerved; he had never caused a heartache in this weary world below, but his office now is empty, for be died some years ago. Once there was a famous singer who had never caught a cold, who would sing for. love of music, never for the love of geld. Whea they asked him if he'd warble he would do as they desired, never making stale excuses when excuses weren't reouired. He would never j speak unkindly of another singer's power, and he made the world about him like a gladsome bum mer bower; shall we never other singers like this gentle singer know? Would that he again were with us? But he died some years :ig. Once there ".vas a daily paper and the owner wouid admit that his circulation hadn't in a decade grown a bit; that it id-'t hold a ca idle In the sheet across the way and he often used to wonder that it lived from day to day. He'd advise the advertisers not to pa tronize his sheet, for it had no cir culation in the mails or on th streets; now he twangs a harp serenly where subscribers seldom go. far to good for earthly laborsT ah! he died long years ago. There 'have bpeD, alas, so many, who have crowns upon their brow, and if they left behind decendants, where are those de fendants now? In the eager rush for lucre, they are crowding side by side, full of strile and selfish longings, wild and evil-eyed; for they say the world was better when our gray-haired sires were young, brakeman always did their duty, lawyers worked and singers suDg; would that we could all be watted, backward from these days ot wee, to the time which they tell us, in the dusk of long ago.
