Something About the Play Nanon, " to be Presented by the Pyke Opera Co. The Pvke Opera Company, with ! Jeannie Winston and the old favor ite stars ot this popular company, will be in Albany next week for two evenings. Referring to the play "Nanon" the Helena ' Inde pendent says : After one has seen Nanon it be comes no wonder to note the fact that the play has scored prolonged and unprecedented runs in the large cities , f the East. And prop er it is that it should be successful. It is certainly one of the most catchy pieces 6n the musical stage a veritable menu of melodv an opera most entrancing and enter taining from beginning to the close. Beautiful scenery, striking situa tions and gorgeous costuming are but a few of the features of the per formance as given by the Pyke Opera Company, to say nothing of the bewitching airs abounding in the play. Briefly described the plot is as follows : The lovely Nanon, hostess of the Golden' Lamb, is to be wed to the if :.. ti i i- , , .uanpns 11 Aiioigne, v. no lias won j her, disguised as a drummer. He i avoids signing the marriage con- j tract by a carefully concocted' .1 HM. .1 . " i Mcuenie. i nen uie scene is trans- ferred to Paris, where are intro I dueed the old court bean Marillac and his gawky nephew. Hector, who are bent on seeing the sights of Paris and all the splendor that the term implies. Nanon goes to Ninon de L'Enclos, the famous beauty, to bring her to intercede in behalf of her drummer, and finds her drummer is Ninon's. A famous' waltz melody runs through the whole opera, and is sung by every body of any consequence from the tenor to the basso, not to mention the struggles of the comedian. Mdtne. de Maintenon and King Louis XIV solve the problem and j get everything righted at the end j. of the third act. The musical numbers that per-! vade the production are such as to j keep the audience in utter delight I throughout, and there is naught I that might be termed dry or tire- j some-in its composition. Dashing Jeannie Winston made the best of ' her character (Ninon de L'Enclos), though it must be admitted that her auditors would be more pleased for which sh is ii1approachallv!llebIf '' 30 fitted. Her voice and gestures are ever bewitching and fascinating, but her physique a.id statuesque appearance are such that would make her ever so much more ap preciable if clad in the tights and top boots of the past centuries In ili imji.sj ui iiic caL cuciuitrsj jii those roles she cannot be outdone, u ...,n v... tii ai. ii? one; niu i ic given tne opportunity ot appearing m such before the close of the season. Miss Manfred,-as usual, was ad mirable a favorite of the evening, and as the roguish Nanon secured applause unbounded. The "laissez aller ' with which she imbues her personifications are quite notice able, and the chic and vivacity displayed signify surely that she enters heart and soul into rendit- j ions. Awfully coquettish and aw fully loving, she succeeds in capti vating the a'udience to a marked extent, doubtless teaching some of lessons in amour previously un known to them. De Langeisever funny, his every appearance a bit, his every song a signal for a call for reproduction from both the staid critic in the drss circle and the mimicking god in the gallery. Mr. Greensfelders excellent voice was heard to better advantage than on the evening previous, his bass sole tioiy r rail ing rapturuu -in the third :ict lie- si v ii encored. Tyke, as: aiwavs, was good, ami a!er ga, none behind the rt-st, shared : the honors of the occasion to a great degree. This latter gen-: tleman is conscientious worker, a close student, and tin encores be-i stowed upon him lust evening were j timely and well merited. The ; Misses Key nolds, Norman, Hageard i and Atkinson, as all the other j members admirably completed tin powerful cast, and it is safe to say j that a more appreciable opera has never been placed on the boards at j Helena. , A Fine Kulldiiig.
