Ou the premises ol John Cum mins of this township are a com crib and a pig sty. each of which h built of logs. The logs are thickly punctured with 'jullet holes, and the bullets that made them are still imbedded in the logs. The logs were cut more than 100 years ago by Colonel Pomeroy. one of the first settlers in what is now Westmoreland county, who built a logcabin in the wilderness, with them for himself and fatnii v.. Pom eroy was a famous Indian fighter as was Major 13eli, who lived with his taniily in a cbiu hail a mile distant. One day Colonel Pommy's cabin was attacked by a. band ol Iniuan?. Th'i firing was heard by Major liell, who crept through the woods to the fcpot. Seeing that the Indian force was too strong for him to nttck he re turned home, placed his wife an two childres -oil his twohorscF, aid raking a circuitous route through the woods, apprwaciieu Pomeroy V besetged cabin Ironi the rear, lie succeeded in signalling the Col : onel, and Pwaieroy managed to get away from his cabin with his lm ily under tbecover of the fwoobs ia the rear. H:s wife :and children ' mounted the horses behind Major Bell's wile and children, and the' party escaped to Fort Wallace, five miles flistant. witi.out the Indians discovering them. Soldiers were sent back to attack the Indinns, but they had disappeared. The bu1 let-punctured cabin was occup ied by Cotenel Pomeroy aod des ceiHianis ol ins until i40, when it was purchnsod by John Cummins, who tore it down and made his pig lion and coi n crib out of its historic legs. 0'ieofM?or Bell's decendacits, living in l.; same neigh I'orliood, has the guw which that noted In dian tigut-er and Rcvi.lutkma soldier usel in ail cf his exploits. Cranks Attracted by the Australian Be ward of $r5,0)0. New Y'ork Sun. , It is hardly more than a week since R. W. Cameron fc Co.. of 23 South William street, as the agent of the Government of New Soutli Wales, made public the offer of $125,000 reward to the Yankee who should rid that colon v of the jack-rabbits pest. The offer was made in view of the tact that the country was overun with rabbits, that were destroyed the crftps of the farmer-. The number of letters received from persons willing to undertake the contract has over whelmed the New York agents. The size of the reward offered has evidently attracted very general at- j tention lrom thosr who would un dertake anything for such u con sideration. From thirty to forty mo hit letters a day have been ' received from all parts of the country, as far west as Omaha. The San Francisco mail is not yet in. , The communication from the would be rabbit extetminators are interesting, and many favorite tneasuies recommended but many of the writers are reticent about their proposed schemes, and offer to deliver the secret method of ex termination C O. D. One simple minded farmer proposes the ordi nary sapling trap, now commonly in use in the iNew lork woods tor rabbits and bear cutis. Another mau describes an automatic clock work device that pounds the rab bits to death. A drawing accom panying this proposition show three rabbits flying in fragments from h machine. One trapper writes that sliced lemon is a suie cure lor raoijits. and he avs he has tried it with success on his farm. The rabbit eat the lemon and "pucker to death from the acid is less than a day." One man said that his suggestion to establish a huge Government sausage factory was worth $125,000. He proposed that the rabbit skins be cured and used for fur. A man writes from Camden to say that poison mixed with flour ami scattered in the grass would do the business, aud he asks that a check for a part of the money be sent to him. He is wiiliug to wait for the rest until plan has been tried. A Philadelphia rabbit hunter re commends that a reward be offered for every rabbit captured, and that the school children in every town and village have one dav a week for a rabbit picnic. A man in Omaha suggests dogs. He says tiiere are too many of them in this country, and what they might be exported to New South Wales to to mutual advantage. One effect of the offer is to awak- hen an interest in the steamship rates to Australia, and numerous inquiries have been made of Cam eron &, Co bv men who want to go out and meet th native hea'h. rabbits on their TIIIXCISUF THE CUT BK. What May Be looked For la the Age to Co ui (. North American Review. The civilization of the future will however, respectfully decline Mr. Buskin's plau for regarding Arcadia by the substitution of moonshine and manual labor for gasiight apl steam engines. Labor-saving ma chinery has come to stay, aud if steam shall uot monopolize the rough work of the next century it is only because it will share its functions with its twin giant of electricity. We shall have steam quarries and steam digging ma chines, and the speed of travel is destined to surpass the achieve ments of the present age by just as a modern express train surpasses a medieval mail coach. The coming American autocrat of the breakfast table will growl at the delay of the morning mail per night boat from Europe. Excur sion trains leaving Boston after breakfast will avoid the night togs of the Cordilleras by reaching the City of Mexico in time for supper. The competition of rail and ocean routes with baboon bee lines will make travel cheap enoug'i to fam iliarize our tourists with every zone of their continent: and climatic epicures will probably contrive to ei joy a perpetual summer by con vening their July picnics in the Yellowstone Park and their New Year's symposium in Valparaiso. The dairy iuterests of the United States represent an investment of more than $3,000.000,000nearly five times as much as the entire bank capital of the country, which is ioTl.V00.000 The Dumiet of milch cows is estimated at 21,000, 000. This is the great industry that is again threatened by the re peal ol the eleoniargarine law, to say nothing about the interest of millions of consumers in being pro tected from a fraud. Explanation. In anotherjcolumn appears under our signature an advertisement an nouncing the closing out of our shoe business altogether at cost. Wl'iy we sell at actual cost is be cause we won't buy any more and wish to clear out every shoe as quick as we can. Of course the public understand very well that if we intended to continue the shoe business such a course would be.to say the least, nonsensical, and our announcement to that effect would oe considered deceptive.
