built of logs. The logs are thickly
punctured with 'jullet holes, and
the bullets that made them are
still imbedded in the logs. The
logs were cut more than 100 years
ago by Colonel Pomeroy. one of
the first settlers in what is now
Westmoreland county, who built a
logcabin in the wilderness, with
them for himself and fatnii v.. Pom
eroy was a famous Indian fighter
as was Major 13eli, who lived with
his taniily in a cbiu hail a mile
distant.
One day Colonel Pommy's
cabin was attacked by a. band ol

afternoon, firing frequently into

heard by Major liell, who crept

Carlisle was taken with another

and his physician was hastily
summoned. At eight o'clock the
speaker was sleeping quietly and
his symptoms at tliat hour were
rather more favorable. At eleven
o'clock Dr. Powers reported the
speaker's condition much im
proved. Dr. Powers speaks very
encouragingly and predicts no
alarming consequences of tlie
attack.
Alter the Knights or Labor.
Ottawa, Ont., Jan. 17. A move-'
ment against the Knights of Labor,
headed by capitalists of the Prov

Wales, made public the offer of
$125,000 reward to the Yankee

jack-rabbits pest. The offer was
made in view of the tact that the
country was overun with rabbits,
that were destroyed the crftps of
the farmer-. The number of letters
received from persons willing to
undertake the contract has over
whelmed the New York agents.
The size of the reward offered has
evidently attracted very general at- j
tention lrom thosr who would un
dertake anything for such u con
sideration. From thirty to forty

letters a day have been ' received
from all parts of the country, as far
west as Omaha. The San Francisco

he asks that a check for a part of
the money be sent to him. He is
wiiliug to wait for the rest until
plan has been tried.
A Philadelphia rabbit hunter re
commends that a reward be offered
for every rabbit captured, and that
the school children in every town
and village have one dav a week
for a rabbit picnic. A man in
Omaha suggests dogs. He says
tiiere are too many of them in this
country, and what they might be
exported to New South Wales to
to mutual advantage.
