Los AnokJiKS, January 1G. Efforts of the City Council re cently removing a little old house which stands on the city's lot on Front street have brought to light a strange story in connection with its occupant, a widow, known as Mrs. JeDnie Leycs. A dozen years ago Mrs. Leyes atd her husband came to Los Angeles from the East and took up their residenre in the house in question. Mr. Leyes was in consuption. and after a long battle with the disease he died some seven years ago. Just -before his death he called his wife to his bed side and told her he' was confident he would return to her and give her int'fnKifirtn alinnt- ttiirk- WcnivU lark41' ! that would prove of . great benefit to the whole world. A few minutes after this statement he died. After a good deal of trouble Mrs. Leyes' friends succeeded in getting her to b"d in another room'. Next morn ing she seemed to le in better spirits, and when her friend asked her why she was so cheerful she 5aid her husbatfd had appeared to her during the night and told her that she must shut herself up -iu the room in which lie had died and neither leave it nor see anyone for i'ig.nr Years, lie toid her that at .' T. VOL. Ill rt;. the end of that tirne she "w'6wJeof 188$ given second' siglitr and v tliat y would be able to materialize broad daylight in any room, "brX even out in the street. Mrs. Loves believed .that what her husband told her, or what she dreamed. would actually occur, so she went into the room and has not been out of it since. She is fed and waited on tniougn a onno aoor ov an oia lady who has stood guard over her for seven years. So far as can be learned no one has ever caught sight of her during all of those years, and what business she had. to transact has been throurgh the blind door or broken window. Several attempts have been made to sot her out of the room, but all have failed. A few years ago a gentiMiian who took oeep interest in the matter applied to the Court for a writ of habeas corpus, bur when the Judge learned ins obiect. and was told that the poor woman was cou filled to her own pleasure, he refused to issue the writ and the woman has not been disturbed until now .
