Pape, Executive Director ♦ * * Don Wilcox, Editor Rick Simon, Assistant Editor Priscilla Carrasco, Editorial Assistant and Circulation Manager Julie Behar, Editorial Assistant Leonora Guinazzo Samuel Hernandez Translations Judi Jarvill Secretary » * By Rick Simon Cloudy skies and a wet field failed to discourage the Valley M i grant league , baseball league from continuing to play over the holiday weekend. In the only game scheduled, Woodburn beat Independence by a score of 3 to 0 in a very hard fought battle. The Area Director of the Woodburn Center, Juan Ruiz, said, "We have had a little trouble recently, but this win did help the team's morale. We hope it is just the first in a long string, of w ins." Independence played hard, but it failed to get anyone across the plate. They made it to third base one time, but as Ruiz commented, "Getting to third doesn't count. You have to get to home, that's when you score." » OPPORTUNITY NEWS is published weekly for free distribution to seasonal farm workers of this area, and to per sons interested in the activities of the VALLEY MIGRANT LEAGUE. The same two teams w ill meet again next week. Then the ques tion w ill be, Can Independence break Woodburn's winning streak? “We must open the doors of oppor tunity. But we must also equip our people to walk through those doors.“ Los cielos nublados y los cam pos mojados no impidieron la liga de béisbol del VML de seguir ju gando el fin de semana pasada. D. C. A LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Mr. Wilcox, Just a note to tell how much I enjoyed the last few issues of the OPPORTUNITY NEWS. The April 22 (Texas) issue was outstanding in its bird's-eye-view of the work of the Valley Migrant League. I am keeping it for reference. In more recent issues, I have found most interesting stories of individual VISTA workers and mi grants. I was wondering if you had thought of releasing news stories of such individuals to the local pa pers.
