It’s Happening at Chinook Winds ... by Teresa Miller Terrific Senior Tuesdays Employee of the Quarter nominees surround Superstar Cliff Smith. Partnership to Prosperity As many of you know firsthand, a rift has existed between the casino and the community of Lincoln City since the first mention of the casino. It has been an ongoing process to break down the wall of indifference, build confidence in the integrity of the casino, and form a working partnership with the community in which we are located. Many things have been done to build a bridge of understanding and establish ourselves within the community as a valued member of the business and social world. We have made an effort to reach out to the community by centering more of our promotions around local clientele. Several drawings have been held on Thursday evenings and the four most recent were won by local people. We also began a “Cash Cube” promotion on Tuesdays that has been well received. Not only does this help improve our image within the community, it also helps drive mid-week play. A number of donations have been made to the hospital and the schools here in Lincoln City over the past few years that have been widely publicized and much appreciated by the local population. We are active in local service organizations and lend a hand when possible in promoting their fund-raisers. Chinook Winds will continue in this endeavor. Working hand in hand with the community will create a lasting “partnership to prosperity” for the tribe and the local community as well, and will in turn strengthen our social and political support. GM Meets With Lodging Owners General Manager Gordon Dickie invited lodging owners *o an exchange of ideas at the casino in April. The “meeting of the minds” addressed the ways in which the casino and the lodging properties could help each other improve the information flow to tourists. The basic premise was two-fold and would benefit both motel owners and the casino: (1) make it easier for tourists to secure lodging in Lincoln City, and (2) make the casino more appealing to would-be guests by developing a way for it to directly book lodging at Lincoln City motels. Participants discussed the idea of linking all properties together with the casino creating a web of information so that bookings could be done in much the same way as a travel agent would book an airline flight. The problem that presented itself was the lack of computer capability at many motels and the cost that would be incurred in implementation. Other ideas explored included the casino hiring additional personnel who would assist people in making their hotel/motel reservations. Methods to increase the number of tourists coming to Lincoln City during the winter also was discussed, as well as how lodging owners and the casino could work together to extend the tourist season. Dickie stated that currently, “Our guests come past Spirit Mountain with the intention of spending one night or maybe two on the coast. It’s my goal to extend their stay at least one more day.” He went on to say, “The casino wants to partner with this group to help explore more ways in which we can help each other.” 22 Wow, what a way to spend a Tuesday!
