In 1985, the Ohio native decided to change the direction of his career from manufacturing to gaming and moved to Las Vegas. Once there, he began learning the business literally from the ground up. From dealer school to multi-game dealer, then on to floor supervisor, assistant shift manager, shift manager, and finally finding himself in Jim Lorson a position to prepare the staff for the opening of a Buffalo Bill’s Hotel & Casino. Lorson has been employed by the Gold Strike Hotel & Casino, Whiskey Pete’s Hotel & Casino, Buffalo Bill’s Hotel & Casino, and most recently, the Stardust Hotel & Resort. When asked why he chose to come to Chinook Winds, Lorson replied, “I accepted the position because it will give me the opportunity to work in a fairly new venue and to work with a great staff to help establish Chinook Winds as the premier casino in the state of Oregon. Of course, there was another reason that I chose to come to Lincoln City, I wanted to move my wife, Karen, and stepson to a small city in the great Northwest. Lincoln City certainly fills the bill. Beautiful country, the ocean and a wonderful job. What more could a man ask for?” Cliff Smith is Employee of the Quarter The nominees for first quarter 2000 were Pat Hess, Lester Walters, Dub Bellinger, Kailinn Gillen, Lorelei Roseland, Royce Johnston, and the Superstar is Cliff Smith. Smith was nominated for his friendliness and courteousness to employees and customers, as well as his excellent attendance. His nomination read, “He is an exemplary employee ... always courteous to his fellow employees. He has a great responsibility driving up and down Highway 101 getting everyone safely to and from the casino every day... a responsibility that he doesn't take lightly. He is one of the friendliest people I have met here at the casino as far as customer service. I always see him giving guidance and direction to customers as he makes his way through the casino.” (See photo on page 22) 21
