J. H. Oakes, one of the lending
wholesale men and moneyed "doers of
big things" In Boise and the lio'se
valley, branis Union county as one of
the finest districts of the west, and
predicts for it one of the most nour
ishing futures of any district coining
to his notice, after a visit to the riiy.
He left La Grande this morning for
points west and will return within two
weeks to spend additional time with
his personal friend, A. A. Roberts, of

the matter of soils and commercial

That a delegate is to be sent to the
Portland annual convention of the Na
tional Grocers' Association which
meets in Portland, June 2, was settled
last night at the meeting of the Mer
chants' Protective Association. The
delegate has not yet been elected, but
will probably be some merchant who
wishes to make the -trip at that time.
