GOOD NEWS Word has been received from Emanuel Hospital, Portland, Ore., that Superintendent Max Penrod is recovering very nicely from surg ery which he underwent on Octob er 12. He is feeling very well. This is good news to his many friends. Our best wishes for a speedy re covery, Mr. Penrod. FAREWELL , Chemawa staff and students said, “Farewell” to two Chemawa em ployees this year. Mrs. Hazel Mason transferred to Sherman Institute, Riverside, Cali fornia where she now teaches iri the elementary grades. Mrs. Florence Wylie retired after more than thirty years of teaching in the Indian service. Mr. and Mrs. Wylie now live at 998 Delmoor, Woodburn, Oregon, in their new home. Our best wishes go with both Mrs. Wylie and Mrs. Mason. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS ELECTED The election returns on Thurs day, October 18 gave the following result. President, Arthur Ahkinga; 1st Vice President, Lee Lapahie, 2nd Vice President, Bertha Koyuk; 3rd Vice President, Jerry Bennett; Secretary, Olga Muktoyuk; Treas urer, Jim Lewis Jr. Congratulations to all. ACTIVITIES This year we have many activi ties here at Chemawa. We can play outside for awhile after supper. We have shows and dances. There are sports like football and intramural sports. I really like football. It is my favorite sport. Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose in foot ball. Richard Charley ED ITO R IA LS WHY I CAME BACK TO CHEMAWA I came back to Chemawa to get an education. Maybe some of you do not know what it takes to get an education. Education means more schooling and learning. We are all here to learn. We can not do our best if we do not get along with one another. We are not here to fight, show off or hate one an other. We need to get along with one another in classes, dormitories and everywhere on the campus. We should always try to help one an other so that we have a good school. We are not different from one an other. We are all the same. Every one is the same. Let’s get together on this. Let’s think of one another so that we can have a better school, good school spirit and get a better education. George Manygoats SAFETY Safety is a very special topic It can save our lives and the lives of others. We should practice safe ty rules at all times. The girls have been practicing safety rules. We can clear our dormitory in one minute. If a person is about to cross the track and the red lights come on and the bells start to ring he should stop and wait. The railroad com pany has put those signals there for our safety so we will not cross when a train is coming. One should also look for cars before he crosses the road. Look both ways before you Cross. Sometimes boys and girls get careless and run across the rail road tracks or the, road without looking or thinking about trains or cars. That is what will cause acci dents and just because they forgot to practice their safety rules. Re member to practice your safety rules for your own sake and for the sake of others. We have not had an accident yet and we don’t want one. Mary Tritt BE KIND Every boy and girl should be kind to each other all the time. If we go around cross and not liking people then no one will like us. I think that it pays to be kind to everyone and to each other. Frank Denet JUNIOR HIGH STANDARDS I would like to toll you some of our rules we have in Junior High. We students are old enough to be have ourselves like grown-ups. We walk in the hall quietly and do not make noises in the classroom. A ll of the students have a bice appearance. We keep good hair cuts and good grooming and act like ladies and gentlemen. We walk quietly when we change classes and keep our voices down. The teachers give us assignments, for home work in the evening. They expect us to do our work without somebody telling us to .study our lessons. We like our school sub jects and we are doing our very best in school. Robert J. Arthur , JUST THINKING I was just thinking why all our students should like Chemawa. It is because so many things are free for us. I am thinking of the hospi tal, food, a place to sleep and a place to enjoy ourselves. Then we have our class rooms with many things in them and our books so that we may learn. We have many things in our dormitories that we can enjoy. We have our Chemawa erhployees. They all try to help us. A ll these things make Chemawa a good school for us. George S. Jim SAFETY ^Everyone knows what the word “ Safety” pieans. If you don’t know what it means I will tell you. It means that we are all supposed to try and not have accidents. We can “ Stop,” “Look” and “Listen” before we cross the road or tracks. In this way we will keep ourself safe. Everyone should think of the word “Safety” every day and try to keep safe every day. Billy Soper CLOTHES FOR THE JOB Some girls and boys work on Saturday jobs. They work all day to earn some money. When a boy or girl goes to work on a job he or she should dress for the job. Prac tical clothes are the best kind to wear. Clothes made of cotton are best. They can be easily washed. Wool or silk clothes spot easily but cannot be easily cleaned. Stella Chester
