The green grass, the trees, the roses and flowers at Chemawa certainly are a thing of beauty. We all want to keep it that way. We, the stu dents and personnel, all come from the many different states and local ities. We are all good American citizens. We all want to work to gether and learn to become better citizens wherever we bright choose to live. Education is a necessity to all boys and girls. That is why we are in Chemawa. I enjoy talking with you. I enjoy visiting your classes and shops. I enjoy attending your dances and parties. I like to be with happy boys and girls. Che mawa has so much to offer you. Let’s all take advantage of it by be coming the new men and women of tomorrow. We have many inter esting things to talk with you about soon. Let’s all make this a happy and prosperous year at Chemawa. HALLIE 0. WALTERS, School Superintendent CAMPUS VISITORS Since the beginning of the school year Chemawa has been host to the following visitors: Mr. Robert D. Holtz, Mr. Richard Balsinger, Mr. George Barrett and Mr. George Lavatta, all from the Area Office, Portland, Oregon. Hurricane Strikes Chemawa On October 12, 1962, Friday aft ernoon, about 4:30, a hurricane struck Chemawa. The wind blew at about 96-100 miles per hour. It did a lot of damage. Many trees were knocked down. A few of the trees hit Winona hall and landed on the roof. On the north end corner one of the trees hit and ripped a corner off. About a day later some men started to repair the building. Which means in a few days the girls will be able to use the build ing again. On Sunday morning and afternoon some boys helped clean up the campus. They did a very good job. Today the men are clean ing the campus also. After the windstorm struck Chemawa, the electricity went off and we were without water, gas, and electricity for almost twenty-four hours. Calvin Brown * * * The hurricane lasted for more than two hours. I was at the gym nasium when the storm started. There were several boys and girls there. It was beginning to get windy. After awhile our recreation lead er, Mrs. Long called Mr. Bartlett and told him the trees were falling down. We all rushed outside to see what was happening. Leaves were falling in all directions, branches were falling from trees and some trees were falling. It was a terri ble sight. From what I hear it was the worst disaster that has ever hap pened in Oregon. Jane Griest Mr. and Mrs. Madison Coombs, en route f r o m Intermountain School, Brigham? Utah, to Juneau, Alaska. Mr. Coombs is Area Direc tor of Educaton in Alaska. Mr. Gordon Cavnar and Mr. Ray mond de Key from Branch of Wel fare, Juneau, Alaska. James Whitworth of Arlee, Mon tana. To those who are here for the first timé, we hope that you will find Chemawa a “Happy Home” and that you will have a happy and profitable year. We urge all of you to take ad vantage of the many fine oppor tunities offered to you to make this one of the best years you have ever, had. In addition to the regular aca- demic and vocational programs you should take an active part in stu dent and house councils, scouting, athletics, social, recreational, and employment programs which will give you an opportunity to partici pate in activities on the campus and in Salem. Best Wishes for a good year of hard study, worthwhile leisure time activities and sound planning for the future. NELL V.
