THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN Student Council Carries On The Student Council has been very busy this year doing what they can to help the students get a good start this school year. We have sponsored an assembly and a Welcome Dance and helped to or ganize the Safety Council. All of the officers elected last year gradu ated so the representatives carried on all the business by themselves. Julia Redhouse, Grace One, Stella Becenti and Lee LaPahie were chosen to act as officers until the new officers were elected. The rep resentatives are Henry Barber, Her man Lee, Jane Griest, Lillie John son, Irene Mitchell, Jerry Bennett, Kee Babbitt, Gloria Harrison, Sinka Littlefish, Stanley Custer, Earl Cleveland, Harry Begay, Richard Charley, James Benally, Lorraine Castiano, Stella Becenti, Grace One, and Lee LaPahie. I was happy that I was chosen for acting-treasurer and I have tried my very best to be a good treasurer for the' Student Council. Stella Becenti EXPLORER SCOUTS ELECT OFFICERS Explorer Post 123 met on Sep tember 25, 1962. The meeting start ed at 7 p.m. President Simeon Ar- nakin conducted the election for the coming year. The officers who were elected are: Max Yunak, vice president; James Charley, treas urer; and James Dale, quartermas ter. The officers suggested that we have dues of 10 cents a meeting to take care of refreshments for part ies and awards earned by Explorer Scouts. Simeon Arnakin and James Char lie are our representatives to the Explorer Cabinet meetings which are held at the Scout Center in Salem. I James Charley SPORTS The Explorer Scouts meet every two weeks. We have many things to do this winter. Last week we learned how to whip the end of a rope. Some weekend we may go to the YMCA in town for a swimming lesson. One of the things that we talked about was safety. Sometimes we may be able to help children across the streets so passing cars won’t bump them. Dennis Elachik At our first meeting of the scouts we got a card. It is called a Tender foot. I am learning all about the Tenderfoot so that I can be a first class Scout and earn a badge. We plan to camp overnight at the picnic grounds sometime this fall. Wilson Buck On the evening of September 15, the football players of Chemawa went to the Jamboree and played with MàcLaren at Mill City. The score was 6 to 6. Friday, September 21, we played with Colton and this was a league game. Chemawa won the game by 13 to 0. We played here at Che mawa. Friday afternoon, September 28, we played at Jefferson with Jeffer son and we lost by 21 to 42. October 5, we played here at Chemawa with Santiam. Santiam made 20 and Chemawa made 7. We have four more games to play, and they are league games. We play a homecoming game here at Chemawa October 12. October 26 we play Siletz at Chemawa. On November 2, we play St. Paul at St. Paul. And on November 9 we will play our last game at Mac- Laren. Henry Barber FALL WEATHER BERRY PICKING Today it is kind of cold outside. Thè sun is shining and the trees and grass never looked greener. Soon the leaves will be falling from the trees and the flowers will turn pale. It will begin to rain every day. The grass will keep on grow ing in the rain but not many of the flowers will be blooming. The rains will stop when spring comes and then the flowers will start to grow again. Betty Cleveland EVery Saturday we go berry picking. All the McBride girls go. We pick one crate and take it to the truck. Then we get another crate. We give out tickets to one of our matrons and the matron takes care Of it so we won’t lose it. We have sandwich and orange for our lunch. Some of the girls say “We’re still hungry.” Sometimes we come back at 3:30, sometimes 4:00. We come back on two buses. , Ella Sun SCOUTING 3 Fire In McBride Hall On September 17 there was a fire in McBride hall. The fire started while students and guidance lead ers were having a guidance meet ing in the rumpus room, which is downstairs. The meeting was over and the girls were starting to go to their rooms. They began to smell smoke. The girls and matrons closed the windows, unpluged the irons, and washing machine. They left the building through the nearest exit. The girls lined up in an orderly manner and stayed in their own unit. The Unit leaders counted their girls to be certain that every one was in line and that no one was left behind in the building. After the girls were in line Mrs. Pentecost told them to go to Wi nona hall. The girls stayed all night i?i Winona hall. The next day Units 3 and 4 missed their Home Eco nomics classes to help washr the furniture* Every room was ok except one room, Number 36. It was burned in side. Room 35 had the curtains ^burned and some of the clothes that were in the locker were partly burned. The other rooms were just smoky. Dorcus Rock- FOOTBALL GAMES Chemawa’s first home game was with the Colton team. Chemawa made thirteen points and Colton made nothing. All the Chemawa students and football players were happy about Chemawa winning the game. Every boy likes football. CROSS COUNTRY RACE We had a cross country race. It was held in the afternoon at four o’clock. We started from the foot ball field and went across the rail road track, then around the picnic grounds, back to Chemawa Road and on to where we had started. We ran two miles. The winners were George Tohonnie, first; Eugene Woody, second; and third was Kee Begay. Dennis Begay A HORNED LIZARD A horned lizard has many sharp horns. The horned lizard lives in the dry, sunny land. Sometimes it hides under the rocks. The Navajo call them grandfather and some people believe it. Earl Patterson
