Who Did It. That's the ques tion ? The appointment of Martin Rowley to a lucrative and respou sible position is much appreciated by that gentleman and his friends. On the other hand it Is causing a good deal of dissatisfaction and those ob jecting to Rowley's holding the posi tion are asking who is responsible, The matter will probably cause some feeling. Quite a Loss. Sunday, while at church, Thos. Ilruce of North Salem had the misfortune to lose a line hoise worth $175. The uuimal dis embowelled itself Ly jumping on a sharp-pointed picket fence. It then bioke from its enclosure and ran beveial blocks with its intestines gushing out, before it died. The Pumkahs. At Chas. Hellcn brand's retauruiit there has been in troduced what is culled a "Pumkuh," or Hindoo fun, by which four huge frames suspeuded fiom the ceiling, and kept in motion by a water mo tor, keep up a constant current of air, that is very giateful to guesU. Died. -On Friday last, Mrs. Martha N., wife of A. Noltner, editor of the Evening Dispatch, died iu Portlaud, aged 45 years, 1 mouth, und 4 days. A Quiet Election "With Incroaslng Wonder as to the Result. At 3 p. m. there is indication that a not heavy vote will be polled. At 0 p. m. the polls close and some voters may be shut out. Tho day has been perfect, but as this has been a backward spring, farmers are behiud with their work and that will not havo much effect either way. IH.AINi: ACT The political sensation of tho hour has bceu the dramatic retirement of James G. Blaine from President Harrison's cabinet. Upou tho Sat urday beforo tho national nven tion tho conspicuous figuru of the administration throws himself upon the country by soverlng himself from the fortunes of tho Harrison regime. As well known for somo time, a combine of leading Republicans have beeu at work to make a second term Impossible for Mr. Harrison. This has not beeu out of opposition to tho two term idea, because some of these leaders were willing to give Grant a third term. It has not been for any reasons aflorded by Mr, Harrison's administration for all speak of it iu the highest terms as a sleau aud able four years rule. The opposition has been purely to attuiu personal ends, if auy tiling. What will bo tho efiect of Blaine's lending himself to this plan at this time? Of course the intended effect was to force Harrison iuto retire ment. There may be a reaction in his favor. It is possible the sober second thought of the American people will repudiate the scheme of the plotters, and the country will rally about Harrison. It is to bo hoped such may bo the case, as It would freo his second administra tion, if re-elected, from n dangerous element that uro not contont with a good Republican ndmiulstratiou but seek to advance their private fortunes. The alleged causes for tho retirement of Blaine are worthy of consideration. One stated cause is "lack of cordial relation between their families." Iu a Republic we are to he deprived of tho service of able men; good government is to bo imperiled; political history is to be made over; forsooth becaute Madame Blaine has a temper or a mad ambition to be the first lady in the laud. It would seem as tho' the dirty liueu of our shoddy aristocracy at Washington should not be ob truded under the nostrils of the nation. Inviting a political father confessor In the person of tho editor of a religlo-polltical paper to pass judgmeut ou his course is not very edifying to the public. o From Minneapolis. Minneapolis, June G. The open ing of the last field day beforo the convention finds botli parties reso lute and confident. The arrival of another score of prominent leaders this morning, showed about the same divisions of sentiment as to Harrison and Blaine, that prevailed tho last two days. The administra tion forces fear another Blaine out buist just prior to the opening of tho convention,. as ueurly all promi nent Blaine clubs from the larger cities are delaying their arrival uu tll this evening or tomorrow morn ing. Harrison people declare it will not dismay their organization or deter their delegates. A positlvo de nial by General Alger, of tho report that he will bo withdrawn from tho contest, adds hope for Harrison peo ple, as it is fully understood that nearly all Alger following will go to Blaine, when Alger is out. Tho prevailing oplulon today is that no dark horses, but a fight to the fluish betweenBlaino and Harrison. Should it come to dark horses, however, McKinley is beginning to loom up strong as a compromise caudldute. North Dakota delegation Is much divided on candidates, but Blaine's friends succeeded In getting the stato legislature to pass resolutions strongly endorsing the caudidaoy of Blaine, "'he vlco presidency is be ing discussed today, for tho first time. Tho Bee Saturday publishes a sensational account of the secrets of tho Bang Kong Toug highbinders' society, tho records of which were captured by tho police after last Tuesday's battle in tho Chinese quarters, iu which two Chinamen wore killed and several wounded. This is the ouly capture of the kind made in tho United States. Tho terrlblo oath tho members havo to take, while kueeliug bowed over burning candles aud incense, nnd all the secrets of tho murderous organiza tions aro revealed. The oath invokes tho wrath of the great god, Shlng, upon every betrayer of tho of organi zation, and each member is solemnly sworn to murder, when commanded, even when the victim is a brother or other relative. A member is re quired to go Into tho street!) and fire pistols whenever ordeied to do so, even if tho persons to bo slain bear the family name of tho assassin. The blessing aud protection of heaven is promised to obey every sign and signal of tho order. The by-laws of the society require every fallen Chinese- woman to pay n monthly tribute of $2 to tho society's funds, aud accord lach member the right to cuter any tan game, put down money for n, bet, demand his winnings, if nuy, and walk off" with ids wager, if luck is agulnst him. A Jewelry Storo Blown Up With Fatal Results. PiTTsnuiia, Pa., Juuo 0. There was a terrific explosion at 1 o'clockj Saturday morning at Kensington, fottrteou miles from Pittsburg, up tho Allegheny river, by which two peoplo were killed nnd another fatally injured. The oxplosion oc curred in tho Jewelry store of J. K. Turner, on Fourth nveuue. Tho building was completely wrecked aud caught fired. Miis Shepler, of Ellonton, Pa., who wuslu the build tug wui tustuntly killed, and Mrs. Sarah Wilson, another occuriaut of tho room, was fatally lujured. J. K. Turner, tho jeweler, wus blown through the roof to the top of n three-story building ndjoinlug, aud his mangled body dangled over the edge of tho roof until tho building was burned down. Both buildings were quickly destroyed by tho fire which followed. Tho explosion was caused by nitro-glycerino. Removal Notice. Dr. E. B.
