In the ail'alrs of this world tbo In fluences that go to build a city aro not the result of cbanco. It is only by gasping at every opportunity aud making tbo most of It that cities llko Salem advance at a pace beyond tbo slow process of accre tion. Enterprise, progress, and rapid growth are the result of aggres sive methods and constant vigilance to promote those material interests which go to make a city. Smooth talk and theorizing will not pro mote factories, build streets aud sii port tbo families of worklngmcn all the year around. It requires em ployment, created out of every avail able opportunity being utilized to advance this to bo a city of fifty or a hundred thousand in the next ten years that will keep the wolf from tbo door of mechanics aud laborers and give the poorer citizen a cbanco to lift up his head and gala a com petence. In the light of duty to tbo masses and the duty of the masses toward themselves, what Is tbo vital point In Monday's eleotlou? What candi dates can wo select who will best proruoto Suiem Interests? It is In our opinion tho county court tloket, and tbo legislative ticket. Hbw do you argue this? may b asked. Tho county court has con trol of all building of county roads, bridges, granting of franchises, and control ofasse9sments.lt Is easy to see how in all these matters Immense in fluences can boexertod for or against ourcity by tho employment of broad and liberal policies of administra tion, or a narrow aud illlboral poli cy, dictated by jealousy and enmi ty of tho city's growing power aud Influence. Tbero aro a few persons In differ ent parts of the county who contin ually make use of every opportunity to arouse prejudice against Salem. They appeal to it spirit of rivalry thai often misleads small minds of smaller towns into Jealousy and bitterness of heart towards tho cup ital city. We believe that was tho spirit largely that dominated the action of tho Democratic county convention, and did ntoro to dis organize tholr party in this county than anything that over happened. A few Democratic politicians, pan doriug to tho prejudice of small minds against a growing city, sacri ficed everything to glvo their party over to tho antl-Salem agitators. They did not consider tho Interests of Salem for a momont iu making up their ticket. Thoy gave every nomination that was Important to this city on the county court or legis lative ticket to persons living In other places and who are uono of them known to have ever showed a friendly Interest In this city. Of some of them not even that much can bo said. Will any Democrat claim that they put frionds of Salem on guard for any of thoso offices, upon the Intelligent and lib eral administration of which the wolfaro of our city depends? No one will claim that for them. With but few exceptions, tho entire autl Itepubllcau cauvasu has been un friendly to Salem. Salem people who wish well for the prosperity of the city must learn to defend them solves. Thuy must vote for the Republican candidates for county judgo and commissioner, and for tho entire Republican legislative delegation. Let tho people of Salem who liavo the upbuilding of tho city at heart tako no chances with hostile Infiu ences. It is paid the devil never takes any chances and If wo lovo our city wo cannot ad'ord to bo less wise than tho father of lies. Let the peoplo encourage thoso broad and liberal policies that lead, not to destruction, but to tho suro road of prosperity uud success. 81I.ENT AIJOUT TIIK DEAD. Capt. D, C. Sherman desorves credit fur his refusing to pay any heed to any of the publications that involved the good numo and fame and publlo reputation of the late Capt. Bubcock, Those publications, Involving ax thoy did the numo of a good man dead and gone, wero prompted by ii personal grievance and usuul for ifolltical purposes. To have assisted In dragging the name of a dead man through tho mlro of a political controversy would havw been extremely unbecoming to any man of sense, and such Mr, Sher man has shown himself to be, lie never titterlngso much an yea or nay In (he matter. He bun been bitterly uttauked and has shown himself a man by his silence. He will bo respected for this. It Is an unwar raiitublH proceeding to base cam paign argumonU upon conversations had with a gentleman, now dead, and reported for personal purposes. This method would not stand moment as evidence in a court, and it will never become popular In poli tics. In fact all shades of men should rebuko It as a malodorous practice. THAT Bit. OUSIOR LETTKK. In a letter without date, purport ing to be written by Dr. W. A. Cuslck of Salem, to Dr. J. W. Mc Clure of Sllvorton, Cuslck is made to Bay: "I am Informed that D. C. Sher man, In a letter to you, reported me as saying that Wethmgtou's failure to secure a pension, or justice, was on accouut of tho objections of two other membere of tho board, Drs. Richardson and Itowlaud. Mr Wellington's record on tho books show that ho was cheerfully recom mended by each member for a pen sion of six dollars a mouth. When Mr. Sherman makes tho above state ment he Is guilty of a deliberate falsehood." There Is a point to tho abeve: Dr. Cuslck or Dr. McClure supplied tbo copy of Cuslck'a letter to tho Salem Democrats to use against the Itepublicau candldato for county clerk. Ono or tho other did. It can hardly be McClure, for if ho wanted to injure Sherman why did bo not give the Democrat's Sher man's own letter. Iu the nbsenco of that letter, the Cuslck letter loses Its force, aud only leaves tho una voidable lnforenco that ho supplied the Democratic managers with this eloventh-hour campaigu material himself. Can this Injure Mr Sher man when Dr. Cuslck was a dele gate to the convention which nomi nated Sherman, or did Dr. Cuslck help put Sherman on that ticket to defeat him? Or did ho know what ho was about on that occasion? 8UCH1USTEU COMMENT, Do uot fall to vote Monday next. John II. Starr has tho credit for making a spirited canvass.
