Telephones are just as much needed at these stations as the other ap pliances. and it seems strange that th* ’government officials have overlooked the needs of these necessities to make the bghthouse ami lif: saving services more effective For instance, should a ship be in distress off Cape Men res the light station has no means ol communicating with the life saving station or with the Bay or Astoria when the assistance of a tug or the life boat is urgently needed. Then ten di»)H)sed voung men in this city, who are the leaders in any devilment which may be going on. and we have long come to tne conclusion that to put a stop to the pilfering and protect other boys from the influence of these ring leaders, only a few jail sentences will bring these voung men to realize the seriousness of their lawlessness. The Headlight is tired of the silly, foolish sentimentalism in favor ol young men who prowl the streets at night and break into people's premises. That condition of affairs would soon b< put a stop to whenever the ring leaders are rdhnded up and sent to jail. And not before. taw« There was something decidedly wrong and unjust in F. J. Ileney causing indict nents to be returned against persons when he knew that the law of limitation applied in their cases. This is what be did in the Tillamook case, and be blowed at the time about his smartness in secur ing indictments within the time limit, when, in fact, he knew he was playing a game of bluff, deceiving the government officials who employed him as well as bringing his own action into public ridi eule. Naturally enough, people laughed when they knew that the Tillaniook case had been dismissed, and for what cause When a public prosecutor resorts to a srstem of bluff, and then takes water after confessing that he did wrong, there was as much wrong on his part as there had been wrong doing on the part of those whom he sought to convict <n indictments which he knew would not stand. Clothe any bright attorney wth the power that Mr. Heney had behind hire-the government treasury, a little army of detectives and a bad lot of lend thieves and perjurers for witnesses— we believe more would end could have been accomplish by a prosecutor who did not resort to bluffing.
